Which status light are you referring to? the 8700 has a green indicator light that blinks your status as a general rule unless you turn it off. the 7290 has no such indicator.

The light that blinks whenever I get a message. Is it possible to keep it blinking green, I think it is, to indicate if you have a connection or not. The light is located next to the phone button on the top of the device.

    Yes...

Options-Screen/Keyboard-and go down...there should be a "Coverage Indicator" or something equivalent option...Turn it to on...

It ends at Key Rate with no "coverage indicator." Maybe it is in a different location, or I have outdated software?

    I don't have my 7290 on me...

When you go there does it not look like this 1/2 way down?:

    Backlight Brightness
    Backlight Timeout
    LED Coverage Indicator

In fact, I havent used the 7290 in so long, does it actually do the green for service? I am about 90% sure it does???

    Font Style
    Antialias mode

    blacklight timeout

    Key Tone

7290 has no coverage indicator light. it only blinks red when there is incoming traffic phone or data
