8700. It's excellent in appearance, excellent BB features, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. He'd be proud of it.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I'd say the 8700 or a 7XXX series. Cheap, works great, just not all the bellz and whistles. I wish I'd have a BB at 12.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I think the pearl would be perfect a little smaller frame and less bulky for smaller hands with up to dated features.

Ditto on the pearl. Young folks HAVE to have a camera and stuff. If you get him a 1-2GB media card he can put all his tunes on it too. You can pick a nice used one up on Ebay for $120.

I have an old 8100 I gave my 6 year old to play with, no service, but it has games and 4.5 OS
Most carriers run specials on them, some even giving them for free with a new contract. I also agree that it has the multimedia features "necessary" for a cell phone nowadays. I would say though, a BB data plan and texting plan on top would be pricey considering he/she would most likely not really use many of the smartphone features. Wouldn't you think it's best to get him a more basic handset? I think on TMo you can add data for less than $10 a month on a regular phone, the BIS with data is $20 and BES is $30, iirc.

My kids have our old Samsung flip phones. No way are they getting a BB to get stolen or lost. They also need the flip for screen protection. They don't realize the value of a BB and would have no use for a data or email plan. I would re-think the priorities.
