The trackball on my Blackberry Pearl does not light up. The keyboard does and, in all other respects, the Blackberry works properly.

Can you give me any idea how I can get the trackball to light up as it used to.

You're trackball should light up when your keyboard does. Maybe your LED has burn out?

I've had to do this procedure half a dozen times now. Gotten better and better at it. Down to about 10 minutes now, start to finish. The keys for me are:

1. Do it on a clean, carpeted the floor -- not on a desk, table or other surface where parts can roll off and be lost forever.
2. During disassembly, pay very close attention to the orientation of the parts. Otherwise, you'll waste lots of time during reassembly guessing at the correct orientation. Not just for the four magnetic rollers, but also the entire unit, the metal clip, etc.
3. I use magnifying visors, because at age 54, my vision ain't what it used to be. Those parts are tiny.
4. I find a toothpick useful as a positioning tool. The four cylindrical magnets can make metal tweezers problematic.
I resemble that remark..! just add a year. ... wear 2.75's as readers and in the welding helmet, when doing demo's, use a 2.50...talk about needing Coke bottoms.!

Great advice my friend.

Red: Our company sales team (20 guys), just all got 8830's. This is one DIY I will pass along to our IT dept. Given we work in dusty / dirty environments and sometimes accidently (it just happened), it gets dropped into a pail of sub-arc flux (a sandy type substance used to shield the weld pool), or some other such bad place...we will need to clean said track ball.

Thank you for a Great write up.

Is it your trackball or the option under Screen/Keyboard?

The Option is the Audible Roll option.

Options>Screen/Keyboard>Trackball>Audible Roll...turn it off.

Thumbs up Re: Trackball Cleaning and Disassembly w/ PICTURES

After using the Pearl for about 9 months today I ran into this irritating problem - trackball only scrolls up and in no other direction. Was all set to send my phone for a service to the local service centre before I came upon this thread.

The pictures were super useful in taking it apart. I was quite disappointed to see not too much of lint inside the assembly and was struggling to make it work after a couple of rounds of cleaning. Then I managed to get the 4 cylinders off and was shocked to see the amount of lint twirled around them Got them off and now it's as good as before. Saved me a few hundred bucks at least and the pain of waiting for the phone to be returned! One piece of advice, do get a pair of tweezers in addition to the screw driver. Makes things much easier. Cheers!
