Another thing that I noticed is while dialing a phone number the beeps are a little slow and some don't even sound.

You can use it... OS's are device specific not carrier.

Although your carrier can refuse you support if you install another's OS

If you have a problem and need to call your carrier I would just tell them your using your old OS incase they ask, and just revert back to the old OS if you ever need to send the phone back.

Be sure to delete the "Vendor.xml" file after installing the OS onto your PC it should be located here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

I am new to this updating stuff. When I hook my phone up to the USB, then application loader, Application Updates Available shows up. Do I click 4.2 sustem software or 4.2 core apps? I already downloaded the updated device software to my PC from blackberry.com.

I'm assuming DoD = Department of Defense. And since the Department of Defense uses the internet and has plenty of websites and have their own intranet, I'm assuming it's for use with DoD employees. Surfing onto certain government or military webpages or sites are only allowed from a .mil network otherwise you'd need a DoD certificate.

That's my guess. I don't have a data plan, otherwise I'd test this theory.

It should automatically check the boxes next to the software that needs to be updated to the new software.

How long has it been hanging?

I would wait this can take an unusually long time... if it takes too long Desktop Manager will let you know (by saying "the loading operation could not be completed")

I just downloaded the latest and it's giving me version .88 multilanguage. Given that and the comments of "no difference" I'm not going to install any updates just yet. I'm happy with the BBP as it is apart from my two biggest disappointments - no video off the camera and no flash player.

Its not the OS that crashed your phone they are device specific and a lot of people have it running fine.

How is your BB now? Do you have a JVM error? Let us know so we can get you back up and running.

OK, so I restored all of my settings and I am back on track. However, now my browser is gone and I have a "enterprise activation" in its place. Damn Upgrades!
