cannot listen to wav attachments since 4.5 upgrade

i get my work voicemails as wav attachments in e-mail. under 4.2.1.107 i would open the e-mail, click the trackball, select 'open attachment,' media player would open and i could listen to my voicemail.

after upgrading to 4.5.0.62, when i open an e-mail with an attachment, i get a choice of 'preview' or 'download and play.' if i select 'preview,' the wav opens in media player and plays, but the volume is about 1/5 of what it was under 4.2.x.x. i just can't hear it. (yes, the volume is all the way up!) if i select 'download and play,' the wav downloads, media player opens, then i get the error seen in the attached screen shot.

(full disclosure: before upgrading from 4.2.1.107, i had previously upgraded to 4.5.0.46. i had the same problem with 'preview,' but 'download and play' worked. i then downgraded back to 4.2.1.107 for other reasons).

of course, i've been through all the options and haven't found anything relevant. anyone here know of this issue and/or have any ideas?

thx!

schmengie...

Okay, I doubt the 4.5 upgrade caused this, not likely, but still possible.

First I would try a battery pull (usually fixes minor issues like this).

Also, what Visual Voicemail service do you have? (YouMail, Simulsays etc etc)

Because you may also try changing them from .wav attachments to MP3

Very odd thing to be happening, I've never experienced this, I'm just trying to narrow it down for you as best I could.

i didn't think about a batt pull cuz i've rebooted so many times (installing sw, etc). i gave it a shot, but, no help there.

i am not using any visual voicemail app. it's a pop3 bis account with a wav attachment.

there's no way to change them from wav to mp3. the format is hard-coded into the voip sw.

and, 10000000% i guarantee, if i go back to 4.2.x.x, it will work again. i've reverted before and it worked.

thx for the input! keep those ideas coming...

Shmengie, sorry for your issue, but that is a VERY odd problem......not sure what it could be, you say they played fine on 4.2 but not on 4.5 -

Okay, it that were me...

First, I would have tried a battery pull - You did, and it didn't work
Second, Changing them from .wav to MP3 - Not possible

Third, Re-Send service books
Fourth, Transfer a .wav file (ringtone or alert tone) to my device, and see how it plays

Testing.....

OK - 8320 with 4.5.0.52
Same result as OP....

There fore we know it is not your device or your OS install. And I also have in the past opened Voip voicemail .wav atttachments with 4.2

I will do some research and see what I can find.

Okay!! shmengie, I copied that exact same .wav file onto my device via USB.....and I got the SAME ERROR as you did....

It may have something to do with the hard-coded file, 4.5 doesn't seem to like it

Okay, I converted the .wav file into an MP3, and It played perfectly!!!

Something is wrong with the .wav files not working with 4.5 if you say they played fine on 4.2.XX

okay, not that i've been 'holding out,' but here's the full details of the file encoding: it's 8-bit, 8khz, mono, micro-ccu encoding. now that i know it's a problem with the 4.5 os handling the format and not my device, i can go back to 4.2, i suppose, and not look forward again until rim adresses this.

a million thx, guys, for helping me out here.

Sounds like the encoding, I'm sure if you revert back to 4.2 you'd be okay, but do you really want to? Lol

Well, good luck, GaryF stated he'd look into a bit more info....Hope it all works out for you

Oh, and you're welcome, GLAD TO ASSIST

Still checking on possible issues....

Are these files being sent from a BES server or BIS?

Thanks. That rules out one possibility.
