the phone was probably on its way to becoming a locked phone. as long as you have an unlocked phone any sim card will work with the phone

Oh yeah, and iDEN is not being phased out, Nextel TDMA is being phased out. iDEN will still rule on other parts of the world, its just because Sprint and Nextel that US iDEN is going away.

yea iden will be puting out the phonex series phones soon. and if u like nextelso much do what i did i got my i870 and ppc-6700. so u can use sprint and nextel.

I've never posted anything before, but, this is terrible! Why is everyone complaining about the 8100? Its just about I said something. The blackberry 8100 has just about everything a person could want including all the normal business functionality and freedom. And what do you know, it has a few more. Including infinite memory,(mem card). How can you complain? Blackberry is simply the best handhel phone in the WORLD!

Wow... I just got the phone and it's great. Small, and no problem with Suretype (would rather use that than a teenie QWERTY), and the form factor is just ridiculously lovely. The media player and the camera are great addition (but don't expect an iPod or a regular 6MP camera for that price). The accuracy of the SureType is amazing; all it took was about a few hours for me to get used to it, and the keys are bigger than the QWERTY on the old Blackberry. And did I say this thing is thin and light, slips easily into my pocket? Plus GPS capable -- been using Google maps and it's fantastic. I love this phone.
