    Basic BlackBerry Etiquette
This is far from a complete list but please consider the following basic Do’s and Don’ts when using your BlackBerry:

    Do:
    1. Keep the ringer on vibrate as much as possible (always if possible)
    2. Remove your earpiece when speaking to a person in front of you
    3. Check with establishments regarding rules on cell phone use (some restaurants forbid them)
    4. Pull off the road when you absolutely must answer a message or phone call
    5. Keep phone conversations as short as possible, you’ll save money in the long run

    Don’t:
    1. Answer messages / phone at museums or churches
    2. Answer messages / phone while driving
    3. Walk and Type (you’ll walk into somebody or something)
    4. Leave the ringer on loud in a restaurant
    5. Talk too loudly – Respect the people around you
    6. Put your BlackBerry on the table at restaurants / bars / lounges (it’s disrespectful to the people you are with, and you might forget it when you leave)
    7. Answer unimportant calls / messages at the Gym

    Things to remember:
    1. Every time you answer work messages during non-work hours you’re effectively working for free!
    2. Try to imagine how the person across the table feels when you are answering your BlackBerry… would you want somebody to do that to you?

Thank you, that was very helpful. Do you know that I have actually SEEN people walking and typing away?

I'm quite sure you have, lol. I myself do that much, walking between classes... I figure its a 15 minute passing time; I might as well do something useful. Now I don't really look at the screen much, mainly just type with one hand... running into someone on a college campus while typing on a BlackBerry wouldn't be to hot.

The rest of that, I pretty much follow. Once in a while I do answer an email while at a resturaunt; but thats only if the other people at the table (most the time its only me and jan) aren't saying anything and if its a pretty cheap place.

Edit: Dang... just relized, this was a really old topic, lol.

    Re: Basic BlackBerry Etiquette

I hate to say it, but I guess I'm not a considerate person. I do and dont do many of the things above. Of course if I had to pull off the road just to take a phone call, I'd just use the pay phone......a number of these defeat the purpose of having a wireless device......
I think perhaps a list of " what it takes to be a considerate person " would be better.....

I agree with you Toddboy71, I am addicted and have no consideration for people without BB's Now if EVERYONE had one then we wouldn't need this list.

Yeah me too. No manners whatsoever. The blackberry is like a gf. All my friends hate it and the attention it gets.

Re: Guide to: Basic BlackBerry Etiquette

It makes sense to follow these guidelines for etiquette. Having just gotten my blackberry, I can understand the other side.... those of us in the world that don't have one...and why it is anywhere from somewhat annoying to just being downright rude to not follow some of these.....

    Do's:
    1) I keep my phone on vibrate.
    2) I don't use an earpiece because I don't have minutes.
    3) I keep my phone in my backpack or leave it at home.
    4) I can't drive and talk or type at the same time.
    5) See number 2.

    Do Not's:
    1) I don't have voice minutes so my phone never rings.
    2) See number 4 above.
    3) I am not able to walk and type.
    4) See number 2 above.
    5) See number 1 above.
    6) I keep mine in my backpack on my chair so I never forget it. However, if I have it out at home, I'm looking for it if I can't find it within 30 seconds LOL
    7) I wait until I am at home to check any message.

    Things To Remember:

I am not working so all of my messages are strictly for personal communication or volunteer work.

I don't go out to eat very much and when I do, I either don't take my BB or I leave it in my backpack.

I guess I am pretty considerate of other people's needs. I HATE to go somewhere and hear phones constantly ringing. However, I am STILL a BlackBerry addict LOL

Speaker phone: if you BB supports speaker phone don't use it in public. I really don't care to hear your conversation...
