Method 1: (Applies to handhelds on BES only)
This article explains how you can import contacts from your company’s Global Address List (GAL) to your BlackBerry Wireless Handheld. Warning: After completing the procedure below, the GAL contacts will be mixed with your other contacts in both the handheld address book and the Contacts folder in Outlook.
To import the GAL contacts to the handheld, Create a new .pst file and export the GAL contacts and Map the folder for synchronization with Intellisync. Instructions below:
First create a .pst file and export GAL contacts

    1. Create a new .pst file (Personal folder) on the computer.
    2. Create a contacts database in the .pst file.
    3. Export the contents of the GAL to the .pst file.
Note: For help with the steps in task one, please contact your system administrator or search for instructions on the Microsoft Help and Support web site.
Then Map the folder for synchronization with Intellisync

    1. Connect the handheld to the computer.
    2. Open Desktop Manager and enter your password if prompted.
    3. Double-click Intellisync.
    4. Click Configure PIM.
    5. Select address book and click Choose.
    6. In the Choose Translator window, click Browse.
    7. In the Choose Address Book Folders window, expand the .pst folder which contains the GAL contacts.
    8. Select Contacts and click Add.
    9. Click OK to close each of the open windows. After you synchronize the personal information management (PIM), the GAL contacts will be available from the handheld address book.

    Method 2:

Import Global Address List contacts to the handheld without mixing with the Contacts folder in Outlook

(Applies to handhelds on BES only)

This article explains how you can import contacts from your company’s Global Address List (GAL) onto your handheld without mixing them with the contacts stored in the Contacts folder in Outlook. Complete the following tasks in sequence:
    Create a Global Subfolder

To create a Global subfolder inside the Contacts folder:
    1. Open Outlook.
    2. Select the Contacts folder located in your mailbox folder list.
    3. On the File menu, select New > Folder.
    4. Name the new folder Global.

Import the Contacts from the GAL onto your Handheld

    Complete the following steps:
    1. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager and connect your handheld to your computer.
    2. Double-click the Backup and Restore icon.
    3. Click Advanced. The Backup and Restore window appears.
    4. In the Handheld Databases list box, select the Address Book.
    5. Click the backup button (the top arrow). The Address Book is copied to the Desktop File Databases list box.
    6. In the Desktop File Databases list box, select Address Book.
    7. In the File menu, select Import > Addresses. The Address Book Import window appears listing the contacts stored in the GAL.
    8. While pressing the CTRL key, select the contacts you want imported to your handheld.
    9. Click Import. The selected contacts are added to the import list.
    10. When you have finished selecting the contacts, click OK.
    11. In the Desktop File Databases list box, select Address Book.
    12. Click the restore button (the bottom arrow).
    13. In the Warning window, click OK. The contacts are imported to your handheld.
    14. Click Close.
    15. If the Save Changes dialog box appears, click Yes inside the dialog box to save changes to your backup file.
    16. Click Close.

Configure the Global Folder as the Default Address Book Folder

    Complete the following steps:
    1. In desktop manager, double-click the Intellisync icon.
    2. Click Configure PIM.
    3. Verify the Address Book is already selected and click Choose.
    4. Make sure MS Outlook is selected as the translator and click Browse.
    5. Locate and select the Global folder created in “Task 1”. The Global folder is located inside the Contacts folder.
    6. Click Add.
    7. From the Selected Folder(s) list, select the Global folder.
    8. Click Default.
    9. If the Note dialog box appears, click OK.
    10. Click OK > OK > OK to return to the Intellisync window.

Synchronize Your Handheld with the Global Folder

    Complete the following steps:
    1. In the Intellisync window, click Synchronize Now.
    2. When the Confirm Address Book Edits dialog box appears, click Accept. The GAL contacts are copied from your handheld’s address book to the Global folder. Note: Because the GAL contacts copied to the Global folder during synchronization, the GAL contacts will not be mixed with the contacts in your Contacts folder during future synchronizations.

Reconfigure the Contacts Folder as the Default Address Book Folder

    Complete the following steps:
    1. In the Intellisync window, click Configure PIM.
    2. Verify the Address Book is already selected and click Choose.
    3. From the Selected Folder(s) list, select the Contacts folder.
    4. Click Default.
    5. If the Note dialog box appears, click OK.
    6. Click OK > OK > OK to return to the Intellisync window.
    7. Click Close.

Re: How to: Import Global Address List (GAL) contacts to your Blackberry

I know this thread is a bit old, but I have a question as I just stumbled upon it when searching for GAL and Blackberry.

I tried to use the instructions above, and when get to step 7, "In the File menu, select Import > Addresses. The Address Book Import window appears listing the contacts stored in the GAL." there is no "Import" under the “File” dropdown menu, only "New, Open, Save, Save As, and Close".

    Am I missing something?

I have a model 7280 BB, and I am using Desktop Manager 4.2.0.10. I am the BES admin and have had numerous requests for the GAL to be imported to the user's handheld.

    TIA

    David

    DKosek, Welcome to PinStack.

I can't help here as I don't know much about BES, but wanted to welcome you and bump this a little on the page. Some one will know how to help you, I'm sure.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help with this problem or your BB.

Re: How to: Import Global Address List (GAL) contacts to your Blackberry

How about another bump. I have a friend who was on BES, but left her company (her BlackBerry) and converted over to BIS. Well, before she left she decided to be really smart and delete all her contacts from Outlook, which deleted them all from her BlackBerry. Shortly thereafter she discovered all her contacts in her blackberry were gone. SO, she has to recreate all her contacts in BIS, thus by typing all of them into her BlackBerry (YUK) because she's no long on BES.

Can these instructions be modified to work with Desktop Manager 4.2? I'm trying to help her input all of her contacts through Outlook then I'd like to create a PST file of those contacts and import them through DM.

    Is there an easier way?
