My Pearl went dead last night. I have tried to wipe and reload the OS several times using the instructions in this thread. It completes successfully, then when the phone reboots, I get an hourglass that never goes away. It has been there for about an hour now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Now that I am paying closer attention, it appears to be rebooting every 60 seconds. Anyone else having this issue?

I have the exact same problem. All I see is an hour glass, and it just keeps trying to boot up. Then it will disapear for a second and the red light will flash several times, then back to the hour glass.

A fatal error has occurred while updating your device's software. Please try again.
A newer version of the Application Loader is required to load the system software on this device [A:0x00000008]

Sounds like you are making progress. Reboot your desktop, and with nothing else running go to the folder :
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
Run the application you find there called "Loader"
When prompted, select "do not back up"
As posted above, select only the core system program at this time.
