Re: Locking or unlocking a BlackBerry (OS 4.x.)

hi, i'm a new user to the blackberry pearl 8100, and i'm based in ireland.

maybe someone could help me with what i see is a fundamental flaw in the blackberry. first thing i did was to 'enable' the password so i could secure the device while leaving it on. during this process i noticed that the device will automatically wipe itself clean if 10 failed gos at the password are attempted!...this is madness!...with kids like mine, or pub mates like i have, it could only be a matter of time before i returned to my device and found that it had been wiped!

question is, can this automatic 'wipe-out' be removed?...after all, if the device is locked its locked, so why wipe the thing?

or alternatively, with my last phone, i could lock the devise with my SIM PIN number, allowing me to leave the device 'on' but locked...it seems this isnt possible with the blackberry, is this the case?

as SIM lock doesnt do any 'wipe-outs' the only safe way i seem to have of securing the device is to leave it turned off (which sort of defeats the purpose of it?) and then using my SIM PIN to unlock it when i turn it back on?

any help appreciated

Re: Locking or unlocking a BlackBerry (OS 4.x.)

No it cannot be removed. It's actually quite helpful to have the feature.

Wiping the device returns it to the factory setting (what was on the phone when you got it). This is very useful if something goes wrong with the software and you need to quickly uninstall the OS (Operating System) and reinstall it.

Another reason to use this happened to me recently and I was SO HAPPY I had it. About 2 months ago, my BlackBerry 7105T trackwheel locked up on me. I could scroll left and right, and up and down. However, I could not click using the trackwheel to select anything. When I got my 8100, all I had to do on the 7105T was use my keypad to enter the incorrect password 10 times, then hit Enter after each incorrect password, and wipe the phone before sending it back to T-Mobile.

The device password (that has to be entered correctly) enables the keypad lock. If this password is entered incorrectly after 10 tries, all data is lost. Therefore, you don't need to turn the phone off unless u just want to.

Re: Locking or unlocking a BlackBerry (OS 4.x.)

Sorry if this has been covered already but when I go to Security Options -> General Settings it does not allow me to Disable my password. It says "Enabled" and has waht looks like a tiny red "lock" next to it which prevents me from disabling my password. It didn't start until I first used my work computer to sync my blackberry. Any ideas on how to get rid of the password?

did you activate the enterprise activation for work? it may be part of an IT security policy that is pushed thru the BES.

Question Re: Locking or unlocking a BlackBerry (OS 4.x.)

Hi,

Can anyone tell me how i can change an IT policy? I have the 8800 but my company is blocking me from using sms. Any ways to release that? I receive sms but it is quite annoying not to be able to answer back the sms from friends.

Thanks for your help!!
