How to: Manage your Blackberry for Max Battery life

These are some good rules of practice that you can do to extend the life of your Blackberry battery between charges.

1. Set Email Filters. Set email filters to block unnecessary messages received on your handheld. The fewer wireless transmissions your BlackBerry makes, the longer your battery will last. (Effect = Little)
2. Decrease the backlight timeout and/or brightness. This is especially true for the newer 8700, 7100, and 7290 handhelds. Go to Options --> Screen/Keyboard to set the backlight timeout to 30 seconds or less for example. (Effect = Medium)
3. Disable vibrate and ring less often. Even just reducing the number times your Blackberry vibrates or the numbers of beeps can give you a a lot of extra battery life. I recommend disabling vibrate OUT of holster all together and reduce audible ring to 2 and not the max of 3 for Messages, SMS etc. Reduce vibrate IN holster to once or twice except for phone calls. (Effect = Great)
4. Turn Wireless Off when you are in areas of poor coverage. The BlackBerry will greatly increase it's output in poor Network coverage, and this can be very draining on your battery. (Effect = Medium)
5. Disable wireless sync on certain applications (BES) e.g. Memopad. Is it really necessary to transmit memopad data over the air? If not, then just disable Wireless Synchronization from the Memopad Options. (Effect = Little)

* Set the Auto On/Off. I don't use this since I'm on call 24/7 but obviously if your Blackberry is off it saves battery. (Effect = NA)

A few more...
- Within the Profiles application on the device, try to minimize the number of notifications for frequent calendar events.

- For new Bluetooth-enabled BlackBerry devices, choose "Turn Bluetooth Off" when you’re not using it..

- In the Options menu, choose "Screen/Keyboard" and lower Backlight brightness level (newer Blackberries)

- Finally, when you are not using your device, put it in your BlackBerry authentic holster — this will turn off the LCD screen to conserve power!

One more tip: For those devices with Bluetooth, I find that manually disabling Bluetooth when you're not using it can significantly improve battery life.

On my 7100 I find logging out of IM applications when I am not using them helps save alot on the battery.

The biggest single drain I notice is when I'm at work, and I get no signal in some parts, my battery will reduce dramtically in a very short time. The best remedy, as Hydn said, is to turn the wireless radio off.

Re: How to: Manage your Blackberry for Max Battery life

I have done the following:

Turn the backlight down to 4 at night before going to bed
Turn the LED indicators off at night
Turn vibrate off
Keep my extended battery in
Close applications I don't use
I don't use Auto On/Off because I get important emails any time of day or night LOL
I will try to set the email filters so I can stop getting junk email.
