The phone application in BlackBerry Device Software 4.0 allows BlackBerry device users to access the address book by typing characters within the Phone Hotlist, provided that the Phone List View field is not set to Call Log.
BlackBerry Device Software 4.1 does not allow BlackBerry device users to directly access the Address Book by typing characters into the Phone Hotlist. To access the address book, complete the following steps:

1. On the BlackBerry device Home screen, click Call Log.
2. Click the trackwheel and select Call From Address Book.

OR

1. On the BlackBerry device, press the Send key.

That last statement should be ". . . press and hold slightly the Send Key." (Green Phone on an 8700.

I noticed while on BES I have the option in call log when I click trackwheel to call from address book, but while I was out of commission for a few days I did not have that option. I had to hold down the green button.
