The parents say it violates there rights as parents on how to raise there children. But like so many other parents, if they wouldn't let technology raise there children (Ex. X-BOX, CABLE, COMPUTERS, CELLPHONES). there would't be a dependency. Even on the trains and buses these kids play the MP3 feature like they have no consideration for anyone else. I can't imagine how they are in class.

I love technology and I love my children having it. If my child has his/her cell, ipod etc on them and they do not use it to disrupt school activities then it's my business, not the schools. My 3 older children all have laptops, cell phones, ipods. If the school system has a problem with that then its something they have to get over.

    bcuzi8paintchips - I agree with you.
Its my job to teach Kaylee correct tech manners. And as long as she follows them she should be free to carry all manner of tech with her, just like I do.
I don't think the school has any say if she is behaving. They need to stop trying to raise kids for the parents.
    My humble two cents.

I am supportive for children having cell phones, but I understand why schools ban them. If there were no bad apples we wouldnt have this problem. My children, when I have them, will be taught to keep their cell phone off and hidden during school hours, only when they leave are they going to have it on!

Its like when i was in school we couldn't bring our GI joes and transformers. Why? Because we disrupted the class. Whats the difference between a $15 GI joe and a $200 ipod? Besides the admiration factor. There's others that don't have it or can't afford it. Therefore it's a distraction. Children go to school to learn. Bad enough it's a fashion show already.

    Re: Children~Schools~Cellphones

I agree with a couple of the remarks that are being made here....

However, if they weren't posing a problem, then they wouldn't even be discussed. Back when I was in high school it was pagers. Remember when THOSE were the big things? Paging your friends with numeric code that they had to translate?

Anyways, I don't believe that cell phones should be allowed to be turned on while in school. As long as they are hidden and not being used, then I don't see a problem with it, especially in the case of an emergency (Example Columbine where cell phones actually helped the people inside the building).

However, think about it, it is like us with our Blackberries...Why do we pull our Blackberries out at a restaurant or in the grocery store and browse pinstack, check and respond to emails/texts? Simple...Because we can...Is it right? Who cares? Does it disrupt others? Possibly if they are not used responsibly...I try and make sure that the using of my device doesn't disrupt others (Taking too long in line, standing in the middle of an isle, etc). However, we are more mature than teenagers, and we know when to do something and when not to (most of the time).

Also, there is a greater liability of cheating. Someone could be texting the answers on a test to their friends or they could be using google or askmenow.com to get the answers...And that doesn't benefit anyone now does it?

Don't ban them, but don't let them be allowed to be on...Pretty soon you will find someone come up with something that will scramble the cell phones in a certain area (example a school) so that even if the phones are on, they will not be functionable...(if not already created).

On a seperate, yet related note. I was watching TV the other day and saw that there is a new ringtone that has been created that supposedly only younger people can hear...

They gave the reason as being younger people can hear higher pitched tones because their hearing hasn't been as damaged yet as the rest of us. I found it interesting...Anyone else happen to hear that?

As Dennis Miller used to say,
Of course thats just my opinion, I could be wrong....

Interesting. And i do agree with the emergency situation. As far as the ringtone that only teens can hear is it the sound of a parents wallet opening? LOL.

    Re: Children~Schools~Cellphones

I have actually heard of devices that can 'jam' cell phone signals rendering them ineffective. If I ever encounter such a device I think I would destroy it . Think of the implications for a Dr. who is on call. A patient with a pager waiting on an organ donation.

Even with jamming technology you cannot really do much to guarantee the students are paying attention. Nor does it guarantee cell phones will not be beeping away with alarms and games etc.

I think the schools should look at bringing the gadgets into the curriculum in creative ways. They could also teach the students how to be polite and use the devices discreetly and when not to use them at all instead of banning them outright.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Man I feel old. When I went to school. The big deal was calculators.

But I feel children should have the right to carry a cellphone. I pods im not so sure about. But cell phones, YES. And my reason can be summed up in one word.

    Colombine.

    Just my opinion.

Yes i agree. But there are more kids using them for recreation than to save lives. Colombine isolated situation. Cheating using text messaging and texting through classes. EVERYWHERE. My mother is ateacher. There is a 3rd grader who has a cellphone and gets her nails done. If her mother can't pick her up is she old enough to walk home by herself? I say again DON'T let technology raise your children.

I must admit, I am torn over the subject. Technology is great, and tools such as phones, laptops, etc are meant to be used. But at what price? Right now only from personal observation that price is the intelligence of our kids. Most kids cannot spell, because of tools like spellcheck. Kids social skill are horrible because they do not know how to interact with eachother face to face. Blame that xbox, psp, etc. And let's not forget about the obesity epidemic.

I love my BB and it is a great tool, but I know if I had to I can survive without it

I have a friend with a son of 7 years. She got a letter from the school stating that some of the kids have pornography on their phones and are sending it on to classmates. I couldn't believe it. THIS IS PRIMARY SCHOOL! They brought out a rule that kids can have phones at school but not the multimedia kind. That way the parents can still stay in touch with the kids. It solved that problem.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~Ok people I see this thread heading into some dangerous waters. Let's just agree that we dissagree. I see good solid arguments from both sides. I and I see things I agree with on both sides. So PLEASE let's not get to heated over this thread.

    Thanks
