    Cellphones at work

The company (a hotel) i work for issued a memo to inform employees that their cellphones has to be switched off during working hours. They have to inform their friends and families that the switchboard can be called during emergencies. If they need to make a call urgently they can do so at a payphone we have on the premisis. This is relevant to all staff from sercvice staff to management.
During a meeting we had it was said that staff are playing with their phones and not concentrating on work.
Luckely i use my BB for work so i can still sneak in some chatting and surfing from time to time.
Does anyone else here on pinstack have policies like this at your jobs? What do you think about this?

I work for a small private company which does not impose cell phone restictions.

I can understand the employer's request for a no-cell policy as it seems employees are taking advantage.

If employees are keeping personal cell calls, or usage, to a minimum I do not see the need to impose a no-cell policy.

I think it depends on what type of job you have. I strongly promote this in my field, but only to a point. We allow cell phones to be on, (as long as its Sprint or Nextel) but they cannot be used for personal matters while customers are present. I like them to be on so customers can hear our distinguishing ringers and sounds, but I wont let anyone answer the phone while with a customer.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~I don't think they need 2 imply any restrictions. Unless there abusing the privelage. Nextels stay on at my job just not 4 personal. If they think there really wasting time imagine if they disable the internet privelages. Thatll suck

The guys are really cheesed off at this. Its obviously only a few ppl abusing their 'cellphone rights' and now everyone has to pay. They now talking bout finding out if its legal. Personally i think its not a good idea to totally ban cellphones at the job as it just upsets the staff and that will influence their performance. It would be better to just put firm rules for cellphone use in place.

I can see this at a hotel, when the employees are in a position to be seen or heard by the customers, but in the employee lounge or non public locations it is an unnecessary restrictions. However, if an employee spends an excessive amount of time on personal calls, that employ needs to be counseled by his/her supervisor.

At my company, most employees are salary. If you get your work done, what does it matter if you spent 3 hours surfing or texting or talking?

But when it starts to interfere with completing work on time, that's when it is a problem.

We supposedly have this policy at my work (Home Depot). But it's not really enforced. Sometimes employee cell use is rude and out of line. But I use my BB for work so I can get away with it.

BB are not allowed in meetings at the company I work for because people are constantly tapping away instead of paying attention in the meeting. I guess sleeping is allowed.

No policies on cellphones. I hear them all day going off at people's desk and sometimes those people are not even at their desk.

I have a coworker who abuses her cell phone. Especially one time when she was having a VERY LOUD extended conversation on speaker phone with her daughter. Completely rediculous. That is why companies have to enforce such policies.

We cuse our NEXTELS freely. Warehouse enviroment. But not in the offices. There is a discreet profile you can use and only answer emergency calls other than customers.

    Re: Cellphones at work

The company I work for is on Verizon and much of our work is done on our phones so it's ok to place or receive phone calls. The only restrictions are when we are in meetings and then they just ask up to put it on silent or vib. The day I can't receive a personal phone call from a family member is the day I will give them their phone back and get my own. I have a 7290 but only with a data plan. I so want to turn the phone on and let them have their phone anyway, but right now it's a savings for me.
