Searched and can't find out how to upgrade my 7290 OS

Hi y'all, this is my first post so please forgive me if I've missed any relevant threads in the search option but I've not been able to find any guide on how to upgrade my blackberry OS.

I've gotten this blackberry 7290 (without any SIM card) and would love to upgrade it for the added functionality such as the ability to switch theme more easily and whatnot. Now this is my first blackberry so I'm pretty much a newbie right now.

I do have the desktop manager 4.1 installed (the 4.3 is too large of a file for me to download via the library timed internet session). I've managed to learn how to install a few things like SpinPen and a version of tetris but I would like more. Particulary the ability to create, transfer, and edit text file for me to type up away from home and then transfer to my usb stick via pc to transfer yet again to my xanga site via the library internet session.

If anybody could point me to a thread that would explains how to install and upgrade the handheld OS (my version is 4.0 i think) and possibly point out how to do the text files like I want to, I would be extremely grateful for the helps

P.S. I've recently lost my internet at home so please let me know if the version 4.3 desktop manager (or any similary large files) is required so I could try to contact a friend and see if I could download these files through their computer.

Re: Searched and can't find out how to upgrade my 7290 OS

    regarding 4.2 on the 7290 "Confirmed previous generation not receiving OS 4.2: 7100, 7100i, 7250, 7290, 7520"
    pulled from http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...vements-2.html
    so no such luck, sorry.

Regarding your other question. who is your carrier? With a data plan you may be able to use the blackberry as a modem via tethering. Depends on your carrier and plan though. In regards to to the typing your notes questions....do you have outlook? if so you can use the desktop manager to synch your notes to your PC, then transfer to USB stick and take to the library.

Re: Searched and can't find out how to upgrade my 7290 OS

thanks for that info on the 4.2 OS. at least is there any info on 4.1 OS? I'm a bit curious to see whether the 4.1 OS have enough of the extra functionality over 4.0 OS to see if it is worth the download and update. (though I've found out that the 4.1 have the better compatibility and ability to switch themes more easily, that alone may be enough to tempt me enough).

about who is my carrier, it is not connected to any service at all. I'm not even sure what carrier it used to be on. Right now there are no SIM card in it. the previous owner had been having issues with it shutting down at random time and it was time to get a new BB anyway so he decided to give me the 7290 BB cause I had needed the battery to mess around with a 6240? BB I've found for $2 at a thrift store. Luckily, it seemed that the problems had dissapeared on me now cause so far the only issue I've had is to try and figure out how to use it to the fullest ability.

about the note transferring ability, I don't think I have outlook. will it work with thunderbird or some other e-mail programs? (I have NO experience with these programs so I'm hoping for another kind of solution like below)

I had installed E-File a few days ago and couldn't figure it out. during a wait in a line to help a friend out with some paperwork, I've decided to mess around with it again and have found out that there is a NotePad-like program in it called ePad. I have not have a chance to hook it up and try to transfer a tesing txt file I've created in the BB. One question about the E-File though, I think I've saw somewhere in the program that it is a 7-day trial. Is there a way to use just the ePad free if the 7-day trial is indeed true?

Hopefully I'll find out some more about the 4.1 soon

    :EDIT:
I'm finding out quite a bit more about the version 4.1 OS and are downloading it right now. the file isn't that big to download to my usb to install at home so hopefully I'll be able to come back tomorrow and let y'all know that I've upgraded it successfully.

Re: Searched and can't find out how to upgrade my 7290 OS

I'm finding that I should've looked through the forum some more before posting this thread. I've found everything that I needed either on this forum or through some blackberry books at the library. I've upgraded my 7290 to 4.1 OS and have figured out how to sync my memo to the outlook (never used the outlook before this).

Now the only issue I have is to try and figure out how to get my memo to show up at the inbox of the outlook rather than the annoying notes section of the outlook. (This my first time using the outlook so maybe I only need to look through the setting to fix this issue but it not really that bad now I can finally transfer files between my blackberry to usb then to the library computer for internet posting and printing.)
