Upgrading your Blackberry smartphone to 4.5 OS...

Follow these instructions exactly and you should be able to have OS 4.x working.

1.) BACK UP YOUR DATA! - I can't stress how important it is to get a good backup in the event you need to restore your data.

2.) Verify that you are using the latest version of Desktop Manager. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager. In the Desktop manager program on your PC use the Help menu and select About Desktop Manager. If you need the latest version follow this link.

3.) If you haven't already, download lastest OS 4.x from this link or if available from your carrier its BEST to download here (select carrier)

4.) Install 4.x using the .exe file you just downloaded. If you are downloading the OS specific for your carrier you can skip step 5. I other words if upgrading a T-Mobile BlackBerry with T-Mobile OS then you can skip this step. However, if you have an At&T Wireless Blackberry and the OS is non-At&T eg. from Vodafone, you MUST follow step 5.

5.) Delete the 'Vendor.xml' file ( C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader ) Or search your computer's hard drive for the "vendor.xml" file. Once you find it, delete it.

6.) Connect the BlackBerry device to the computer. If prompted, type your BlackBerry device password and click OK.

7.) Open Desktop Manager. It should recognize that there is an upgrade for your device. ('Vendor.xml' must be deleted for this step to work).


8) When the Application Loader Wizard is finished examining the configuration on the BlackBerry device, the Device Application Selection screen appears listing the applications and OS version available for installation. The selected check boxes indicate applications that are already installed on the BlackBerry device.

9) If you didn't backup first you should select to do so now.

10) Follow the prompts and you will have OS 4.x installed in about 15 to 20 minutes.

I am in the process of searching my PC for the vendor.xml file for my 8100. However, it is finding my WordPad document on how to reinstall the OS when the PC doesn't recognize the BB. I am hoping I can get this to work because my 8120 is toast until 4.5 comes out for it.

question..if you have two berries can you have download both diff upgrades on ne computer?

ya, i have all the OS for the 8100, 8300 and now 8310

DM will ONLY install the latest version.

Well, what problems are you running into? My process was like this:

1. Download and install DM 4.3.
2. Hook blackberry up and run a backup on phone.
3. Download and Install JL_cmder
4. Wipe BB using JL_cmder
5. Download and Install 4.5 OS update
6. Delete vendor.xml file
7. Pull battery out after phone is wiped. Hook up to computer and start DM.
8. Click on application loader
9. Because the battery is out, the computer may act like it cannot find the phone. Just click next to continue
10. DM should show the new 4.5 os update in the application list. Check the programs you want to install and click next/install
11. As soon as the DM begins the OS install (I believe it erases applications first) pop the battery back in. If you don't do it in time, then the install will fail.
12. Let DM install the OS update
13. After DM says it is done with the update, unplug the phone and wait patiently. The phone initialization will take FOREVER (mine took almost 15 mins).
14. After BB comes back to life, hook BB up to computer again and run Restore.
15. Enjoy!

I figured it out!!!! The reason why some of us are having trouble is because we deleted the wrong .xml file. Search your PC after installing it for vendor.xml. The file should pop up, delete it and you are ready to go. I think that the file is hiden and thats why. If you delete a file thatr says a lot of random letters like p3ouujs.xml or whatever, that is the wrong file!

ok...so yeah, im not trying to do that...if it means having all my apps and games i paid money for to get deleted for an upgrade..nahhhh...im good



wut if it did work for me, and all i had to do was click the link and the upgrade was made...if i plug in my 8100 to my DM...would all the apps n games still erase?

no, just remember to back up your files.

I prefer to wipe my BB every time I do an OS upgrade. I could be crazy, but I feel like I notice a difference between a fresh install and an upgrade.

how can i back them up now if i dont have the proper OS installed?..i got 4.5 OS on DM but my phone is showing 4.2.1....

could i still go into my 4.5OS on DM to backup and restore even tho the OS dont match?
