No Data Plan

I have a Pearl with no data plan and was therefor not able to send MMS's or browse internet.

I upgraded my OS to the Mobilkom Austria [A1] 4.2.1.101 from the ATT 4.2.1.96

Since then I've had service books sent to my phone and am internet and MMS capable. Also I'm still being displayed "edge." How would this be possible without a data plan?

Re: No Data Plan

I think you can still have EDGE but no data plan if you were to use media net it would be the speed of EDGE it doesnt just mean its the speed for the data plan

Re: No Data Plan

I wouldn't use it too much.. if you don't have a data plan, then what you're getting is probably pay per use and it's going to cost you out the @$$.

Re: No Data Plan

If you're BlackBerry is displaying "edge" that pretty much means it's not able to connect to the EDGE data speed.

Your phone should simply display GSM in that area and possibly say "Data connection refused."

What I would do is access the internet a little and then wait for the bill to be printed to see what type of charges show up... most likely you have the pay per use feature added to the account, on certain occasions I've seen AT&T do a sweep on their accounts and automatically add PPU features for customers.

Re: No Data Plan

I'm still surprised upgrading the OS enabled internet and MMS use. I didn't think you were able to recieve service books without a data plan.

Re: No Data Plan

I agree, there is no way that an OS upgrade enabled anything. The data connection settings are controlled by your account provisions, which is done by AT&T.

Re: No Data Plan

Just to let you all know, the Mobilkom Austria [A1] 4.2.1.101 software IS putting service books on the phone somehow. I have a Pearl with no BlackBerry plan, and never have had one. I have used the unlimited media net plan from day one so that I can access email through the Gmail App, IM through Jive, and browsing through Opera...

Well, I did this update and now I suddenly have the service books that allow me to do MMS (wasn't able to before) and the BlackBerry Browser is now enabled and working (again, this was disabled before as well). I checked my account, sure enough, still no BlackBerry plan and only MediaNet Unlimited.

Minus the push email, my Pearl with the MediaNet plan is just as functional as Pearl's on the BlackBerry plans. Yay!

Re: No Data Plan

Portable

I would have just gotten in touch with you via PM, but I have not felt the need to make any silly comments....so I will have to discuss this in the public forum. I guess I need to babble on so that I can have full functionality..

I am interested in how your Pearl is working with the MediaNet plan. I am planning on getting a Curve in a few days when the 8310 is available. I am not a corporate big-wig. I am a middle aged guy who hates T9 text entry, wants a QWERTY phone, but doesn't care for Windows Mobile.

Anyway, I don't mind paying for my data. I really don't need BES or BIS. I just want a good phone (voice) and the ability to send a few text messages, and rarely do a little web browsing. I bet I don't use 6MB of data per month....I have no use for push email, but might use Gmail... I currently have MediaNet unlimited with 200 messages/mo.

So, please send me a PM and maybe we can discuss it a little more??

Thanks

Re: No Data Plan

After reading this again, my guess is that when the OS upgrade was completed, deleting the vendor.xml file may have removed the "lock" keeping the data plan info from being pushed out to the phone. Since you have the non-BB data plan, you can access the internet browser. You don't have push email/BIS, but it doesn't sound like you want that anyway.

I realize this thread is a couple of months old, so my response is for anyone reading this later from a search result.

Re: No Data Plan

I also have a Pearl w/ ATT with no data plan but unlimited multimedia messaging.
I downloaded and installed the Mobilkom Austria [A1] 4.2.1.101 OS.
My MMS button in the camera mode is now enable but when i try to send, it says "No MMS Service Record, message cannot be sent. You will only be able to Save Draft."

Users: Kev585 & portablecow, did you guys experience this problem?

Everything worked fine on my old phone (non-smartphone), i know i have multi-media messaging.
Please Help... anyone

Re: No Data Plan

Nevermind, now its working.

What's weird though is that now the ATT store guys are telling me that im getting charges 1 cent per kilobyte on the MMS picture messages even though i have unlimited media messaging. That would be over $2 a picture.

I have unlimited multimedia messaging and i cant find any info anywhere about a 1 cent per Kb charge. I talked to customer service, they say to wait for the bill to see if my data charges match the same times and dates as when i sent the messages. They said i shouldnt be getting charged.

This is really weird. If they are charging me, I will have a few hundred dollar phone bill. (I have been sending over a dozen a day at 250 kb.) I talked to a retired lawyer about my situation and he said if they are charging me, he could hook me up with some lawyers, because it would be a huge deal.

Has anybody heard anything about this 1 cent per kilo charge on ATT. The store manager said i can send unlimited messages but then i gt charged for the data that goes along with them. If so, how is the consumer able to find this information. The store clerk said that that information is only available by knowledge, it is not documented anywhere. I guess i just have to wait for the bill.

Re: No Data Plan

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com) I suggest you don't use your internet feature with ATT if you don't have a data plan with BlackBerry. I did that, thinking that it was some kind of fluke on ATT's side, but when I got my bill, I was charged pay per use. I argued with them, and they said this happens a lot with new blackberry users. They cleared the charges, over $450 worth of charges.my MEdiaNet plan did not cover blackberry days transfer.

Anyways, for those of you who have a media net plan instead of a blackberry plan, might aswell pay that extra $10 knowing you will be free of charges.

I dont use the internet, I'm only sending MMS picture messages.
The guys at the store said my MMS are also using the internet.
My problem is that I cant find that information anywhere.
The website, and all documentation do not say anything about MMS charging internet fees.
