8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

trying the above on a curve, Getting the following error...

"Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated"

Will this work on any Vista laptop? I tried and reached a successful connection between it and my 8700g after query modem. Next, I went to Properties/Advanced but I couldn't input the T-Mobile string. It was as if the input box was locked out. Anyone familiar with that issue?

I had this working about 3 weeks ago. Today I tried to use the BB connection and it doesn't work. I get an Error 692. I have been trying to resolve this for hours. Uninstall, re-install, re-configure, etc...

Just can't get it to work again. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I see 2 RIM ports, COM4 and COM5. Any modems I setup can't complete a diagnostic query. The enviromnent is Windows XP on an IBM Thinkpad T60. It is so annoying because it worked so easily, the first time I setup it up a few weeks ago.

Got it working again. Had to go into the registry and delete certain references to BlackBerry. That got me communicating with the Modem again. Received an error 736. Changed the init string to +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com" and now it works.

Damn, tried again today and the Error 692 is back. Frustrating. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the unlimited internet on my BB. Is that what your talking about when you say an unlimited plan?~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

I have found that pulling out the battery in my 8320 for a few moments and putting it back in gets my laptop back on the internet.

Note: I have found that I have to do this once or even twice to get a stable connection through my BB any time I try to use it. Certain types of downloads like minor windows updates or driver searches will crash my connection and the only way to get it back is to pull the battery again.

Very unreliable and disappointing.

Does anyone have an idea why the "IP" needed to be added in? I have an 8100 and recently upgraded the OS. Ever since I've needed to add in the full +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

I've followed this thread to the letter.

I have BB Desktop Manger 4.5.0.15

I have the modem driver installed and modem shows up in device manager and tried all init strings I could find.

My laptops OS is Vista Home Premium.

I get no error code, just a failed to connect.

Anyone have succes getting this to work under Vista?

Figured it out.

I would post links to all the info I looked at and even the links I found on RIM and T-Mobiles websites but since I'm not a Link 2 or what ever it said I can't.

But you can find an official walk through on T-Mobiles website if you can manage to get to their configurator where you tell it what you want to do. I'll quote the result at the bottom of this post. RIM has a similar FAQ on their website, but its giving incorrect info. Like dial up number #777 and that you have to have a user/pass provided by the service provider. This maybe correct for some (Alltel comes to mind) but not T-Mobile.

Basically what it boiled down to was two issues. One under Vista you have to change all the various port speed locations to 19200 and the other was a Copy/Paste issue in Windows. I totally forgot that Windows doesn't strip out the garbage you get when copying a web page. So it was pasting

into the init field when it should have just been

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

Notice the bolding and the "" are different. Well Windows doesn't display that difference but formating is there. Once I typed the init string by hand to remove the hidden formatting I connected just fine. At the very least when copying and pasting these strings from a webpage retype the "" so that there system defaults or do what I learned back in the days of WYSIWYG editors, is to always sanitize your text by running pasting in to an app that will strip that hidden formatting (notepad.exe for example) and then copy and paste into the desired app so all it gets is true ascii txt. Wish I had thought of this yesterday when I started this little venture after being told by work were switching phones and providers and no you can't have a broadband card, yet half my day is spent on a website that requires IE or Mobile IE to get into it. Got to love bottom liners that only care about costs and not what its going to break in current processes.

You may setup your T-Mobile Internet device to use the T-Mobile Internet service by following the instructions below. Note, however, that T-Mobile cannot guarantee the performance of T-Mobile Internet devices that are not currently supported by the T-Mobile Internet Manager.
T-Mobile Internet with your BlackBerry 8700g and Windows XP


Prerequisite
RIM BlackBerry 8700g handset purchased from T-Mobile
PC with an available USB port
BlackBerry Desktop Manager software installed from accompanying CD. If the CD is unavailable, visit, t-mobile.com/bbupgradeand install the most recent version of Desktop Manager Software.
User should be logged in as Administrator or have administrator privileges in the profile to modify system files

Setting up the modem

1. On the PC, connect the USB cable from the USB port to the side of the handset. Windows will detect the handset and install the drivers.
2. Double click the Desktop Manager icon.
3. Click Options and then Connection Settings.
4. Click Detect.
5. When the Warning dialog box appears, click OK.
6. The dialog box should display: USB handheld found, click OK.
7. Ensure that the Connection field displays USB-PIN: and click OK.
8. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel and double click the System icon.
9. Click the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
10. Click the + next to Ports (COM & LPT) and make a note of which COM port is assigned to the RIM Virtual Serial Port.
11. Return to the Control Panel and double click the Phone and Modem Options icon.
12. Click the Modems tab and click Add....
13. Check Don't detect my modem; and click on Next.
14. Click to select Standard Modem Types from the Manufacturer list.
15. Click to select Standard 19200bps Modem from the Models list.
16. Click Next.
17. Click to select the COM port assigned to the RIM Virtual Serial Port and click Next.
18. Click Finish.
19. Click once on the Standard 19200bps Modem and click oProperties.
20. Click the Advanced tab.

10. Check the box to select the Standard 19200bps Modem.

12. For the ISP Name, type T-Mobile GPRS.

16. If prompted, click to select whether you would like this connection available for Anyone’s use or My use only.
17. Click Next.
18. Ensure the User name,Password and Confirm password fields are blank.
19. Check to select from the available options below and click Next.
20. Click Finish to complete the setup.

Making the connection

1. On the PC, return to the Network Connections folder and double click the T-MobileGPRS icon.
2. Ensure that the Username and Password fields are blank.
3. Ensure the number to Dial is *99#
4. Click Dial .

You will now be connected to the T-Mobile GPRS service.

YOU MY FRIEND ARE A GODSEND. I've been trying to figure out what went wrong w/ my Bold tethering. It was working all along until I installed .282 and then suddenly my modem driver went missing... so I reinstalled DM to get my modem driver back and tried to paste the init string from a txt file I saved. Thing would not work - I thought it was .282 and wiped and downgraded and ended up w/ the same problem. Searched everywhere and you figured it out!!!!!! It was those stupid " " marks!
