I am happy to report that there is another happy customer in the house. Went through a lot of troubleshooting to get there, but I am currently up and running with my WiFi disabled. Very excited. I cannot wait until Europe in November, traveling between countries with complete wireless FREEDOM!

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

Hello everyone,

Another happy exNokia newBlackberry user here

I followed up on the first post on setting up the modem, but unfortunately I wasn't able to connect to my local ISP. It seems like the phone hangs up after 16sec. (or the ISP side) no matter how I change the settings. Query Modem shows Blackberry's modem response and everything seems to be OK. Also, during connection I can hear the modem handshake.

P.S. I tried using the recommended string too.

Any help is highly appreciated !

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

For me the init string didn't work without adding at to the front of it. at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

I tried adding 'at' but still wasn't able to connect. I also tried replacing 'wap' with 'internet2'. I don't have BB data plan, but this worked with my Nokia just fine.

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

Update: As the other member did, I deleted the space in the below string and then it worked.

Is this an error in typing the instructions posted here? In any event, the fix for me was to delete the space between the first quote mark and wap so it looks like this:

+cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"

To the member who posted about deleting the space, thanks! When typing it for the first time I too wondered if that space was supposed to be in that string.

Update, no, the space isn't supposed to be there.

My bad...Didn't realize that I had put it in there with a space, and I kind of lost track of this thread, but recently found it when it was bumped today.

Initial thread has been updated.

Thanks to those who pointed it out and sorry for any difficulties it caused.

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

I have HP NC8230 and Compaq N610c Laptop, when I connect T-M 8700 to both laptops, the standard modem will install on COM5, The RIM Virtual Serial Port is on COM5 also, but I can not query modem successful, got errors below after I enter +cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"
in adv tag or at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com".
I have BB DM 4.11 install, I even update RIM Virtual Serial Port driver from "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Modem Drivers".
So I just can not get it to work, create connect and it can not dial, modem port can not be opened..can someone help?

Thanks.

DSR is low while initializing the modem. Verify modem is turned on.

Re: 8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

Man this was easy! Thanks for the info! I think using the 8100 is faster than my dial up! I live out in the country but I get great GPRS signal with TMO so this works much better. One question though..... If you use your BB as a modem with an EDGE connection, does the speed increase??

Thanks

In short, yes. From what I understand EDGE is multiple access GPRS, basically you access multiple channels of GPRS for a faster connection. And the performance is noticably different. I have EDGE coverage while at school, and when I go home I have GPRS, and suffer every weekend I go home. lol jk... jk

If you are trying to connect a pearl to a computer, you must have 4.2 Desktop Manager on your computer, or else the DM won't recognize the Pearl
