8700 As Modem (TMobile Users)

Hey everyone,
There has been a little bit of confusion for TMobile customers on how to set the 8700 up as a modem. Apparently TMobile has upgraded their DM and it is so much easier to do.

First go to www.t-mobile.com/bbupgrade and choose "get software".
Enter your cell number and download Desktop Manager Version 4.1.1.12

When that has finished, first make sure that you have completely deleted your old version of Desktop Manager, and install the new version.

Now go to Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager.
Scroll down to Ports. There should be 2 listed under RIM. Make sure you know what COM Ports they are under (Probably 4 and 5). Write them down if your memory isn't that good.

Once you have done this, open Desktop Manager and connect your Blackberry. Once the link between the two is connected, go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Create a New Connection.

Under the Network Connection Wizard, chose:
Connect to the Internet>Set Up My Connection Manually>Connect Using a Dial Up Modem.

When you get to "Select A Device". Check the box that is the COM Port that your RIM Port was listed under.

Next, under ISP name, name it something like "Blackberry, BB, T-Mobile, etc).

Under Telephone Number, put *99#.

Leave the User Name and Password blank under the next option.
If it is going to be ur default internet connection, then make sure that box is clicked. Now click Next and Finish.

Now press Dial and try to connect.

If you fail to connect, then do the following:

Go to Start>Control Panel>Phones And Modems>Modems. Click on the COM Port associated with the Network Connection you just set up and click on Properties.

When that opens, go the "Advanced" tab. Put the following under Extra Initialization Commands exactly as it is written here:
+cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"
Make sure you put the commas, quotation marks etc. and then click OK.

Just for fun you can now click on the Diagnostics tab, and press Query Modem. You will see it query the modem and say Blackberry.

Save your changes and go back to "Network Connections" and Dial the connection. You should be ready to roll!

Also I have a 7290 that's just sitting there with a spare sim. Would the sim need to be activated? Just courious as to whether this can be done. Thanks

You will need a data plan on whatever phone u were using it on. It will work for any pc. I actually have it set up as a backup on my work computer so if the net ever goes down, all I have to do is plug up the bb, open DM and connect and I am on.

As far as extra charges, there are none (atleast not for now). In all honest I could see t-mobile charging for this in the future as more and more people become aware of this and start doing it.

May not be as fast as a wireless card (yet) but it does give pretty decent download times plus it doesn't cost any extra.

Hi all.

I recently upgraded from the 7105 (T-Mobile) and can use it as a modem. However, there are some sites (i.e. google.com or other major sites) when I am in EDGE mode that the sites WILL NOT come up. Am I doing something wrong or is there a fix for this somewhere? I called the help desk and as usual they were useless. Sigh. Been a blackberry user since the pager model days

I have yet to get this to work. I get to where it says "registering on the network" then it disconnects with the following error: TCP/IP CP reported error 736. The remote computer terminated the control protocol"
Any hints?

I was getting this and probably for a couple reasons, first I just installed the software and the blackberry was disabled. After enabling, I got the same message. This ended up being that I had mistyped my password. It should connect up nearly instantly though.

Its the only way i can get the web. so i can truthfully say it works and it works well.

I had the same 736 problem.

I closed all internet-related apps on the 8700 that were hidden (cycle via alt-esc)

I removed the SPACE from the advance settings (so no space before wap):

Code:

+cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"

and logged in with an EMPTY username and password.

Anyway, it works, as I'm typing this on that connection. ;-) (115.2KBit/s it says)

PS Can anyone confirm that this is 'free' with an unlimited dataplan on T-mobile... they screwed me once before with a $400 overage bill after 'all family plans have free roaming' as advertised on TV was apparently did not include MY family plan, bastards.

PS Actually, I just realized this 115.2 speed reported is the max. speed of the com port. A little test on speakeasy reports 160kbps down & 80kbps up.

I wonder if the max serial port speed is the limiting factor here (it's not the USB). According to the Enhanced_Data_Rates_for_GSM_Evolution entry in WikiPedia more should be possible.

Anyone have tips, suggestions or comments?

As far as maxing the speed, I will look around and see if I can find anything...

As far as being charged extra, as long as you have the Tmo unlimited plan, you will be fine...I have been doing this for a few months now and my bill hasn't changed at all...And I think that last month I had about 140MB or so worth of data transfer.

This is so awesome! I finally got sometime to get this to work. We're actually on a five hour drive and I made my wife drive so I can configure this thing out. I got connected and I am writing on my car while my wife is driving! Thanks N8DBB!
