| Phone as a modem with Nextel
Does anyone know if Nextel plans on letting us use our BB as a modem like the rest of the free world without having to buy a 3rd party software. I know it will be slow but being able to connect in a pinch would be nice.

Trust me you are not missing anything, if Sprint wanted that kind of data traffic going through the Nextel network, they would sell aircards for just that purpose. I have been in this business for a while and can tell you I have never seen one. The throughput would be half of a 56k modem and that might be streching it. Anyway, I have my laptop setup to use my Sprint 8330 as a modem and it just sits there and states "No Wireless Device Detected" with the 8350i plugged into SmartView. It never ungrays the connect button. Muff |

This might help, please keep in mind the settings are for a specific carrier so you will need a different string to put inside advanced settings

The 8330 works great at as a modem through Bluetooth with my Macbook but I don't know about the 8350i. I will say this...the 8350i as a modem would be painfully slow. iDEN data is around dial-up in speeds. It is molasses slow. If you really want to use a Curve as a modem, switch to Sprint and get an 8330. It gets EVDO Rev0 speeds and is quite nice and fast and PAM is included with no hacks or anything.

@resqguy, That modem is not currently sold by Nextel and is no longer supported by tech support, if you call the number at the bottom of the page, you will get a Sprint rep that will try to sell you a sprint card, that runs on EVDO. Thanks for a blast from the past but i was refering to currently sold and supported solutions. Muff |

| 8350i can be used as PAM via SharkModem, BUT... Quote:
Found out the 8350i doesn't have PAM, but technically it can be used that way with SharkModem as I have used it myself with that program and it works (BARELY). As another person said in this post, the bandwidth of iDEN is slow-end dial-up speed. If Nextel ever decides to upgrade the bandwidth capability of its iDEN network (maybe using something like WiDEN or restoring WiDEN which it was using until October 2005) it might work halfway acceptable as PAM using SharkModem. WiDEN incidentally is 4 times faster than iDEN. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiDEN The fastest I've ever been able to register on any speed test sites with iDEN is 24.5 kbps (almost the absolute maximum possible, which is 25 kbps), which is almost cruel and unusual punishment anymore. I'm considering sending my phone back before the end of the month because it was advertised by Bluefish Wireless as being PAM-capable and practically-speaking it's not, and Nextel says it's not. I just have to decide how important PAM is to me. I thought it would be nice if I was on the road with my laptop someplace where there is no Wi-Fi, but it may not be something I'd ever use that much. I may keep it, still deciding... Last edited by ssybesma; 01-21-2009 at 11:45 PM. |
