Good luck!
Boogie, Just curious as to why. I never had the 8830 but I have a friend who does. He's not quite as "into" BB's as most of us are but to "avoid completely" is pretty strong and I was wondering about your reasons.

Well, I know a half-dozen friends who got the 88's, all of whom are semi-techno-phobes and who really dislike the 8830. Most, if not all, had the same issues and all of them regretted getting it. Maybe it was Curve envy ;-) but I know a bunch of similarly-non BB people who got the Curve and love it. I myself -- a mongo Crackberry addict -- have very little complaint about the Curve as well. I've been having some issues with some applications (Facebook and Twitter) but those aren't the fault of the phone hardware. I just figured if TI's looking to get a new phone he ought to get something a) as new as possible and b) that's gotten universal praise from real-time users and not been panned as the 8830 has been.

Well you guys keep me in the know on this. I was looking forward to becoming Verizon within the next month and switching to the Tour. Unfortunatly just talked to my Rep and we won't switch until Oct 17th . Hopefully by then you guys will have all the bugs figured out and I can just start enjoying it.

That's a bummer, Cowboy, and a surprise to me. I can't believe it's going to be that far away. I guess it takes time to get it all done but I just assumed that the conversion would cover most of the country and be close together in time. The only coversions I ever did were credit card ones (for banks) and those were all done at once regardless of the number of accounts. This IS a little different though.

Got it. Thank you. I have only surfed the net on my laptop -- either plugged in or via a wireless connection, and occasionally on my BB 7250. On the BB, yeah, it's slow. Certainly not a user-friendly connection.

I am not really familiar with 3g other than I've seen it advertised with AT&T and the Apple I-phone. I just figured 3g was the "latest craze" or the most modern or current wi-fi; or perhaps an alternative to wi-fi connecting. As far as my BB, and others, I actually thought the BB connected via wi-fi. Probably because I really didn't know what wi-fi was. I thought wi-fi was just wireless connecting, like a wi-fi hot-spot. So, I just thought that the BB connected via wi-fi, but it was just a very slow type of wi-fi -- not the most current, modern, etc.

Anyway -- thanks again.

I'm planning on getting the Tour this week as Alltel moved to Verizon yesterday in my area. I've already called my Business Rep and said, "order me one."

I'm definitely looking forward to it.

Either way, I would go for the Tour if you can have a week or so between the day you get it and the day you leave to make sure everything is working properly, but if you won't have that much lead time, hold off and get it when you return. Either way, the one thing I can recommend with complete certainty is to avoid the 8830 completely.

Good luck!
Thank you very much for the advice. I wanted to stick with Verizon, although the Bold did look very nice (for what little I know). If I get a new BB I have to sign up for some plan and they usually run two years. I just didn't want to get locked up unless I was getting a BB I really wanted and liked.

I will probably have a week or so, and it's not like I'll be away on a desert island, LOL. Once I get a new BB, they tell me I have to charge it, do a few things, and then I have to call and coordinate with my corporate IT people and get the BB synced up and working, integrating, etc. with their BES, my Lotus Notes/laptop, etc.

I'll have some time to call in, work through a few minor issues -- but they have to be minor . . . because I am a Tech Idiot! LOL. Thanks again.

My pleasure, word of mouth is the best way to gauge whether something is worth buying or skipping :-)

I agree, it's not a bad way to find out the skuttle on a device, especially if you get several different folks opinions and "average" out the info.

I stopped by the Verizon store to look at replacing another phone. I played with the Tour again. Looks really cool. Of course I am comparing it to a dinosaur in the 7250 so most of my observations will be a bit uncommon.

The buttons are a bit different and have a different feel, but they seem to be rather close to the 8830 so that doesn't seem like a big change for most people. The one thing I found a bit "new" and weird is the trackball as opposed to the track-wheel. The trackball seemed small and jumpy, but of course that's on a demo unit that has been out, touched and played with for days.

Doesn't matter -- I am looking forward to getting this new BB.

Tech, Reading your comment on the trackball vs. the track wheel reminded me of my move from the 7130e (w/ track wheel) to a trackball BB - I thought I was gonna hate the trackball and NEVER get used to it! Live and learn. Looking back the track wheel was like having 3 thumbs on one hand. The point is move ahead with confidence - after the 1st day you'll wonder why you ever doubted the trackball.

Same here, I started with the 8703 (a wheel) and quickly migrated over to the then-newly-released Curve with the ball. The ball isn't perfect btw -- after a while you may need to have it brought into VZW for a quick clean/service -- but it's infinitely better than the wheel. Having the trackball over the wheel is like having the mouse over arrow keys from pre-Windows OS's. Really convenient. And the learning curve will be next to nothing, you'll be too busy smiling over the fact that you don't have any more wheel with which to contend ;-)
