Report: iPhone Won't Be Sold In Many Parts Of The Country

Report Via: Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal

Apple Inc.'s new iPhone is expected to make a big splash when it hits the stores in June, but you reportedly won't be able to buy them in all or large portions of about 19 states.
That's because it is being offered with exclusive service offered by AT&T's Cingular Wireless, which can't be sold to residents in those places, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

The iPhone service won't be available in all or large portions of:
    Alaska
    Colorado
    The Dakotas
    Idaho
    Iowa
    Kansas
    Maine
    Minnesota
    Montana
    Nebraska
    Nevada
    New Hampshire
    New Mexico
    Upstate New York
    Oregon
    Utah
    Vermont
    Wyoming
    Other places.

While Cingular customers can roam on other networks or other carriers, new customers have to live in communities the company serves.

What exactly is the 'iphone service'?

Wouldn't looking at a Cingular coverage map tell you the same?

Of course, by the time this thing launches, there may be roaming agreements in place to allow downloading, streaming, etc. Until then, who knows?

Its not stating that the iPhones won't work in those areas, its stating that they won't be available for purchase in those areas. See below from the intial post.

In a way, it would be advantageous if all carriers guaranteed that phone-'X' would receive adequate signal support in a similar way. Far too many coverage promises are made which ring hollow once the phone is in normal use. Personally, I don't see it as a bad thing, but I realize it's not exactly a positive thing if those in the more remote areas you listed have a high demand which Cingular cannot currently support.

That's nonsense. The iPhone will be available wherever Cingular service is available, period! The electronics inside our phones are made by only several chip makers in the world.
Why do you think so many people are after UNLOCKED phones? Currently we have two standards, CDMA and GPRS/GSM.

The whole, 'exclusive availability' is always short lived. I can not imagine for a second that the iPhone will only be available at Cingular for more than about 6 months. There is no way, Apple corporation would limit their market to only ONE carrier for more than an introductory period.
