    Mod'ed G1 Discussion

I don't see a thread on this subject (or it is well buried), so I thought I would start a new discussion.

I hope we can kick start this part of the forum with our Android users. Many of you may know I have been test driving a G1 off and on for the past several weeks....well this week with all of the recent news on cupcake, I decided it was time to discover what all the fuss was about.

So I rooted my device (much easier than I expected), and after a couple of days running the JF RC33 build, I jumped all the way into the pool with Haykuro's Beta 5.0.1H r4....

First I am glad I waited for this update, as I have had little or no issues for the first 24 hours (other than the system being in Chinese language when I first updated ) I am still learning my way around some of the new features, but I do love the soft keyboard. Camera is now a video camera, market works fine, and there is FINALLY a built in PDF viewer! I will post back further observations....anyone else chime right in!

Our friend Haykuro has posted his planned weekly update with 5.0.2G and 5.0.2Hr5. These new builds do not require a wipe to install, and both now have full marketplace access.

I plan to upgrade Monday before the cast, hopefully to the G (google) build this time.

I am currently running Haykuro's 5.0.2G a2sd on my G1. Updated a couple days back. No real issues to speak of but it does not seem to have all the apps that the HTC build has. ie video, docs, etc. Does have the google sync though (obviously) were the HTC build does not. It runs alot smoother then the HTC build does so the missing apps are not a deal breaker. Worse comes to worse I'll find a way to write them in or wait for someone else to and update.

Updated today to 5.0.2H / ADP1.5Hr3-A2SD (revision 3) and installed the radio update.

This added multi touch (zoom) to the browser, but so far I seem to be getting a lot of "force close" messages, and had at least one call simply drop.... I may need to wipe and go to the 5.0.2G...

@Eddie - did you install the new radio?

Two comments here....after continued instability I decided to try the 5.0.2g version, still having issues I went back re-installed but performed a wipe prior to installing...all seems much better now...I will stick with this version for a while, and see what gets updated Friday.

This version does have video, but there is no icon, it is in the setting menu while in camera.

Yeah i installed radio version 2_22_19_26I. No issues as of yet. Signal seems to hold much better. It's a heck of a lot faster and smoother then the HTC build. I have it overclocked at 527.15 MHZ and it seems to handle that a lot better then RC33. I did see that the video camera is in the camera options so thanks for that Gary.

Time for a Saturday update....JesusFreke released his modified version of the 1.5 Cupcake build today...having had good success with his builds in the past I am installing it...as recommended I first updated my radio to the HTC 1.5 radio build (same as Eddie mentions) ota-radio-2_22_19_26I.zip, available HERE

Once again, I installed this update without a wipe first to test the results. So far all app's are working the device is lightning fast....verified features include the multi-touch browser zoom...

Just reporting back that I am having no issues thus far with this JF1.5 build.

For the curious, I am planing to post some simple How To's next week on rooting and updating your Andriod G1's.

Wow. I can't wait for the 1.5 update. I was trying to hold off and wait for T-Mobile to release the update but I'm getting tempted to try one of these released versions.

Did you wipe before you updated?

I don't think any of these include the My Faves app.

When I had issues with a no-wipe update I found that doing a wipe / re-install helped...only big deal is you have to go back and reinstall your apps.
