If you have the latest Google Maps you can download up to 5 area maps for offline use in Navigation. If you get TomTom, this app downloads all maps to your phone or sd card.

Oi! KTW the Droid king..., it seems you don´t have one.
Anyways here goes: Open the Google Maps app, hit settings button, hit Make Available Offline. Maps will open your area map, and by pinching on the map you can increase the area until the maximum allowed, which is around 85Mb. Hit save.
You can do this for 5 areas of your choice. These maps are cached on your phone, so when you use GPS you won´t be accessing Maps via the web.
    jfcooley and KTW like this.

thanks del, but its not that I don't own a droid, its just that its in for repairs and when I get it back I'll download the offline map that you suggested...so things are not what they seem del

is it possible to buy a "pro" or "paid" version of google maps so that I can get the whole of RSA and perhaps most of western europe offline ?

Nope GMaps ain't for sale. These are area maps, local. For continent or country maps you'll need to buy TomTom or similar.

GPS dose need a GPS receiver to operate. Any (*)Maps app needs data to download the map. GPS locates you.

offline Google mapss still just as useless as online. you still need an active data connection to use the search and navigation feature, so it dose not help..been looking at mapswithme, its good but the developer is still adding navigation to it. so also no good
