1. I am finally Back, and have been working with Linux and the Android Platform for a while now. As a Windows Network Engineer for the last 18+ years, there has been quite a learning curve- Below is my first post. It is a tutorial for changing your bootscreen, ie, the one that says "G1" ( for TMo) when you first turn your phone on.......


2. Turn on the phone into bootloader (camera+power).
Make sure it say fastboot in the middle if not hit back and it should appear-

3. Make sure your device is found in device manger
If you don't see adb device up top in device manger find the yellow mark devices
Right Click, update driver, and point to the location of the USB Driver
(http://dl.google.com/android/android_usb_windows.zip)
(Driver for 1.5r2)
If you have the "new spl" you're going to need the new usb drivers
(http://sapphire-port-dream.googlecod...er_updated.zip)

The "new" spl would be haykouro's custom spl.......

4. Open and extract the below zip to your desktop
You should now have a custom and fastboot folder on your desktop

5. Open up a dos window (start>run>CMD)

6. Type cd desktop then cd fastboot

7. If you would not like to flash the sample images skip to step 9

8. copy and paste the command line by line
fastboot flash splash1 mysplash.rgb565
fastboot flash splash2 mysplash.rgb565 You dont get a splash2 option with the "NEW SPL"
fastboot reboot

Part 2 Making your own images
9. Open up the "create" folder

10. Run CreateG1Splash.exe

11. Open up your image in the program and click convert

12. Go to the folder of your images and their you will find mysplash.rgb565

13. Place the mysplash.rgb565 into the fastboot folder

14. copy and paste the command line by line
fastboot flash splash1 mysplash.rgb565
fastboot flash splash2 mysplash.rgb565
fastboot reboot

BTW- over on xda-developers there are several iterations of accomplishing this; I simply compiled a straight forward one. Several individuals have contributed to this, including myself.-chris

Included is a copy of my current boot flash image...

Note- if you get an error trying to run the "create" file, go here and update the net framework on your pc.

I'm still too new with my Moto Droid, not ready to mess with stuff yet, but it's great to have the info when I'm ready! Does it matter what device or version of Android your device is running....meaning would this work on the G1 and the Hero and the Droid etc.?

Yes- the command lines are standard linux commands, that you would run in terminal. So the device connected to the usb is not an issue. However, You will need to root your phone to do alot of the things I will be talking about, including the above. I can provide you with a guide to do that, but the Verizon Droid is so new ( plus it is cdma vs gsm) that rooting it will be slightly different. I may be talking greek to you at this point, but when you root your phone, the first thing that must be done is installing a custom recovery system and SPL (Secondary Program Loader). After that, you are at the point where you can install custom "Roms" ( complete OS, if you will). For instance, when my G1 boots up, aside from a different splash screen, the user would notice I have the Motorola Blur OS, complete with all the bells and whistles. Seeing as the G1 has been around the longest, there are tons of custom roms and themes to choose from. I would say it will be at minimum this time next month before the rooting process and installation of custom roms will be established and "Stable". So just hang in there and let the devs do there thing. I can certainly give you a heads up when that time comes. Don't want to root your phone and have it become a pretty paperweight- Chris
