Extortion tactics for good review. Google Play & Questionable Devs

OK. I've got images of Emma's birth that I wouldn't want my boys to see. Or just anyone for that matter.

To keep them secure from unwanted little eyes and prevent accidental deleting I downloaded Gallery Lock published by Morrison Smart Software on the Play Store. I read the reviews, tried the free version, then decided to spend the $2.99 to purchase the software. I try and support development by purchasing apps that I will use frequently.

Everything was fine until day 2. The app deleted every image.

    Gone.

The developer has a fix posted on the store in the description. I tried this. Didn't work. I searched my SD card, internal SD card manually looking for the images. I hoped they would be there, somewhere and recoverable.

    They weren't.

Now before I go on it has to be noted that Google Play has a 15 minute return policy. After that 15 minutes you have to contact the developer. I did this with a description of what happened, how I felt about it (you can imagine), and that I wanted a refund.

I got a reply asking for my Play receipt, and I'd receive my money back. Good to go.

    Thank you.

    Not so fast.

After sending my receipt I got an email telling me that since I had posted a review (not glowing and honest) I had to replace it with 5 stars and (preferably) no comments before he would refund my purchase.

    Hi John Cooley.

You have written a comment on Play. Before we cancel your order, please change stars and a comment of Gallery Lock and notify me it.I will cancel your order after this.

    Regards,
    Kim.

Think about that. It goes beyond just extortion. It defeats the whole point of reviews. How often has this happened? With this developer? With others?

I replied asking if he had wanted only glowing positive reviews then should have created an app that worked as described. I also wondered how how he felt if I amended the review to reflect his request, and shared the emails with xda, here, and anyone else that would listen.

So you want me to not give an honest review to receive my refund?
I'll add that there was a refund but I stand by my review. Your app deleted every image it was to protect. If you only want positive reviews then o suggest you fix the app.

How about this. I share this email with xda, my forum, and any one else that will listen, as well as change my review to reflect it.

    your order was canceled.
Consider this when you read reviews. If you are a developer reading this, consider how this affects you. I doubt Morrison is the only one.

Big thanks to Del for his editing help.

There was another review from a Robert Kelsey on March 18th with the same issue, Jay. Notice that he has the same device. He didn't say as much, but you don't supposed this is related to the SanDisk SD card issue, do you?

No. My card wasn't deleting anything, just failing to mount. All files on it were visible on PC as well. I searched card on phone and PC. Folder the app creates was there as were its related files. Only thing missing were my images.
