one more thing - is there an app that would provide a turn off function as opposed to pushing the power button on the top?

For emails you do need to tap the check box for each then choose to delete or mark read. Idk about the app to power off, but I'm curious about why it's needed...

Really? When viewing the list of messages there is no check box(left) next to each?

Isn't that device on 1.5? If so there was no bulk email delete in that version. If remember correctly, that was my G1 days. lol

yep - 1.5 - is there any way to get a later version or will i just have to wait? I'm good with blackberries and iPhones concerning updating OS/firmware, never done it with an android though...

Unfortunately there's no way to upgrade the Backflip yet. That's the biggest down side to that phone imo. 1.5 was missing a lot of basic function. Another month and AT&T will have better Android devices. If you're still within your remorse period, I would take it back, and wait for the Sony X10.

IMHO this phone is prime for rooting. Hopefully someone will solve that issue soon ...
