Chicago Tribune: Cell Phone Vending Machines?

Would you like a phone with those chips?

Just like a candy bar or a bag of corn chips, Motorola cell phones will now be available through what essentially are giant vending machines.

Schaumburg-based Motorola Inc. on Wednesday unveiled "Instantmoto," a "robotic store" stocked with phones and phone accessories and deployed in airports and malls.

Instantmoto will start as a pilot program in 20 locations nationwide. Three are up and running, including one in the Macy's store in Chicago's Loop and another at San Francisco International Airport.

If the pilot program succeeds, more stores are expected to follow, said Bob Many, Motorola's director of automated retailing.

Each machine will hold about 30 products. The product mix, initially at least, will be about 12 phones and 18 accessories, Many said. Accessories will include headsets and phone chargers.

The phones will be Motorola's mid- to high-end models, including the popular Razr and the Q, a rival to the BlackBerry.

Hey N8, could you check that link. Says Page not found. I'd like to read more about this. Sounds like a nifty idea. And cell phones are not nearlly as fattening as chips or a candybar.

Hope the phones don't get stuck like a bag of chips. Then I would have to apply the tilt monuver.

Ross Park Mall in Pittsburgh has one of these machines. It's pretty slick. They also have a machine that sells iPods. Each machine not only has Motorola devices, they also have accessories. The phones are locked to different carriers (Cotton Candy RAZR is locked to Cingular) and are sold in conjunction with service plans, or are unlocked for a higher price.

Re: Chicago Tribune: Cell Phone Vending Machines?

I spent a year in South Korea (Aug 9 05 - Aug 15 06) and I can attest to the Koreans already doing this. Their "cellphones" in general were already light years ahead of us...live TV??? They had this way before we did. And you think the RAZR, SLVR and KRAZR are thin...go to any Asian country...they have some extremely small phones!

But, at Seoul International Airport, there are plenty of vending machines scattered throughout the terminals with cellphones and accessories!

    It's crazy!

Macy's on State Street in Chicago has about 6 different machines. They vary in product. They had Ipods and apple items in one. Motorola phones , and in another BlackBerry's. They have a security camera to make sure that you get your product and if not a toll free number. You use your credit card for purchase.
