This is actually better than when I had to root my brother-in-laws through text. He kept getting confused on the file structure (0 folder, bet Craig knows) and couldn't find a zip he had to install. I got so frustrated I just did it myself when he came down.
The at&t s3 was rooted almost exactly as mime was. Don't get me started on an HTC.....that damn dev token.
Its just a matter of getting the su pushed to the phone and gaining root. Cakewalk after that.
Don't know why im taking a different post, bit Nome of these are tagged so...
Once twrp is installed I'd like you to download quickboot as well for convince sake. It will allow you to boot to recovery without all the damn button presses.
Quick boot/ recovery.
Once TWRP opens, choose backup. At the top you should be able to name it. You can if you wish. Near the bottom it may say "internal storage", I recommend changing to external, but you can always copy it over later.
Let it back up and reboot. Hook your s4 to your Mac and find the backup. Copy this to your Mac.leave it on your phone as well.
Apps to look into:
Titanium is a must.

+1, need to tag this whole creaking post for both of us.
You can have a lot of fun now. Some interesting apps out there for root. If you keep touch wiz, look into Xposed framework on xda. Winam Xposed will let you play with changing a few things like status bar and such.
Always backup if you think you're going to hose something.
