Lightbulb ++++Unlimited download size for files OTA (for podcasting etc...)

I wasn't sure where to put this (general, 3rd party, how to) so I put it here.

These two threads got me started working on this...
5MB Download Limit (Work Around) (by msbrenda64) and
Lists of Multimedia WebPages/Alerts/Podcasts (by N8DBB)

I got interested in Audio Podcasting a few days ago, yet found alot of files
were just too large to download OTA. Msbrenda64's thread
started to get over the 5m download file limit, yet it still seemed
capped at around 7mb's or so. Anything over 10mb I still couldn't download
OTA.

Found a work around that allows you to download anything, regardless of filesize.

w00t!

What you'll need to pull this off:
+BlackBerry with media player (8xxx series and up) w/ UNLIMITED data plan
+MicroSD card
+The final key to the solution...Opera Mini (currently using version 4.1)

So now what?
Find something large to download.
See N8DBB's thread above or try CNN, NPR, BBC, Google: podcasts, etc....
Look for RSS feed buttons, or direct links to MP3s and so forth.

Next Configure Opera:
Menu Key > settings > disable "auto complete address input."
By doing this you are now able to 'paste' into the new address screen.
Menu Key > Save > Escape Key
Menu Key > Enter Address > delete whats already there

If you have a direct file link to the particular podcast (Mp3 file for example),
Paste the address into Opera
Menu Key > Enter Address > Menu Key Paste
If the URL is to one file in particular, make sure the end of the URL has a file type only. If there is anything after, delete it.
example: http://podcastdownload.npr.org/anon....r_91718047.mp3

if its an RSS feed it will most likely end in ".xml" which is fine
(sometimes it doesn't end in .xml though FYI)
example: http://marketplace.publicradio.org/RSS/mmr_full.xml
Press the '+' sign to open the feed.
You can also scroll to Subscribe to the feed as well below the '+' sign
(it will then be added to your opera start page under the Feeds icon)
Scroll to the particular podcast and press the trackball.

Now, once you have the feed or direct file, Opera will give you a prompt:
npr_91718047.mp3
SAVE or
OPEN
Do not select OPEN as it will invoke the BB default browser to
attempt to open the file. This will fail.
You want to select SAVE.
Opera will then ask where you want to save the file.

The default is Music folder. You can save there if you like, although its kind of a pain to find the file again if you have alot of podcasts mixed in with your music.
I set up my own folder for Podcasts.
From the save file prompt > scroll to browse > then scroll to SDcard.
You can then scroll to <Create Folder> and name the folder what ever you want
(I named mine Podcasts for obvious reasons )
Select where you want to save and Yahtzee, the download begins.

You'll see a download status at the bottom of Opera Mini with file size and remaining file size.
A 20 mb download took me around 5-6 minutes w/ Verizon's CDMA network.
It will take longer with GSM (EDGE) network, although I am assuming WiFi or 3G would be much faster.

So now, to play the podcast, we go to:
Media : menu key (where the five icons are) > explore > media card >Podcasts > select your file.
Enjoy!!!

End notes: It's alot of trial and error so far. I use a PC to find potential
sites that have podcasts and RSS feeds with podcasts. I do alot of copying
the direct link to .MP3 file and sending that via email to my BB, then copy
that address and paste into Opera. You can just try using BB browser or opera to find podcast links and RSS feeds as well if you want to not use a PC at all do this.

(the whole goal of this experiment was to do full podcasts w/ out a PC)

Also just make sure you have enough space on your MicroSD card, as I
tried downloading a file that was 100MB or so, and ran out
of space prior
to download completion (stopped at 80% lol)

Next thing I want to try and figure how to use this to download various
video files that are large...

Last note: Hope I didn't forget anything and may the Schwartz be with you!

Interesting I've never had that problem I'm running the Beta 4.5 OS and I have downloaded PODCASTS over 100MB using the default browser not Opera. The new 4.5 Beta OS takes away the need for opera.

Ah, so that's why. I am running 4.3 OS.

So the newer OS does away with file size limit. Whoo hoo!!!!

This won't work for me. All the downloads saved on my card are 1k in size and obviously don't play.

Great find thanks. Neither do I have problems downloadind large files with the default browser. Could this be a carrier dependent issue?
