Post How To: Install Apps/OS via a Mac

Below are the simple steps I've used to successfully install applications on my Pearl via my Mac. Keep in mind, you DO need a licensed version of Windows (XP or Vista) and a copy of VMWare Fusion (free while its in Beta, final cost unknown).

This was the only method I've found that works - I've tried Parallels, but didn't have any success - apparently thier USB support doesn't cover it...

    1) Download VMWare Fusion 3 (Beta)
    2) Install VMWare Fusion 3, default settings are OK. (Actually they are the preferred settings!)
    3) Install Windows XP/Vista as per VMWare instructions. (Its very easy and will walk you through the install, its easier than installing Windows on a windows PC!)
    4) Download the appropriate version of Desktop Manager for your provider:
    - Cingular
    - T-Mobile
    5) Install DM as normal, default options are OK.
    6) Open DM, select 'Options' and then 'Connection Settings', and select 'USB'
    7) Connect Blackberry (First time it'll take a few minutes as it detects and installs the drivers).
    8) Enjoy installing your applications via your Mac!

Once you have DM installed, you'll also be able to install the OS Upgrades using the standard procedure...

No. Download the software from blackberry Blackberry PocketMac. Once you select the blackberry icon, then under one of the menus there is a way to install.

Not true.. You need to use Parallels (or some Windows virtualization app)... can't do it directly using OSX.

When I first got my BB Pearl all up and running and realized how undersupported Macs are I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I hope that RIM is working on correcting this major issue. Thanks for this post I am downloading the vmware as i type. Hopefully I can utilize my BB to its fullest now with this information!

I stand corrected with this - If you have the latest version of PocketMac for Blackberry after launching the app you can go do 'Utilities' > 'Install Applications to Device' and install apps with an .alx extension...

Very cool.. I wasn't aware this worked! (I just updated mine, I know this wasn't here with my older version, I'm not sure what I had before though...)

Re: How To: Install Apps via a Mac

PocketMac works for me...most of the time. Has anyone been able to install Opera Mini via PocketMac? I've tried several different downloads of the Opera Mini and I keep getting the same error.

"Unable to locate one or more files required by this installer."

    I have both these files:
    operette-hifi.alx
    operette-hifi.cod

Any ideas what else I need? Thanks.

Re: How To: Install Apps via a Mac

I'm new to blackberry. I have pocketmac on my macbook. I installed several apps on a trial basis, but would now like to unintall them. I went through "utilities" and "uninstall" and it looked like the right thing was happening, but the apps are still on my pearl. Now when I try to "uninstall" pocketmac doesn't recognize anything to uninstall. Any ideas how to get the useless (un-purchased, un-registered) apps off my bb?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    Welcome to the forum.
I am pretty new myself, but from my understanding you can delete files with the blackberry by going to
    Options/Advanced Options/Applications

Select the application you nolong want and delte it that way.

Also, I would recommend downloading a windows virtualization program and using the desktop manager for your specific carrier. Pocketmac is a piece of crap compared to any of the windows based blackberry programs as far is am concerned.
