How to: Blackberry as a bluetooth modem with a Mac

Actually, Dave Taylor figured that out. It's a bit tricky, but he used the directions that Grant at Fibble.org posted (also seen on pinstack), reproduced with illustrations and my commentary for Mac:

Re: How to: Blackberry as a bluetooth modem with a Mac

I tried to follow this but to no avail for me. I am running an iBook G4 with OS X 10.4.9. I have a BB pearl with OS v4.2.0.64. I called TMO last week for support and the guy told me that my request was a once a month type request.
Anyway here is how he told me to do it....

    *go to taniwha.org.uk

*scroll about half way down the page to where it says in red "Scripts for BlackBerry GPRS/3G (27kB): BlackBerry 3G Scripts " and download these scripts.

    * Go to HD>Library>modem scripts and leave it open.

    * Open the downloaded folder and drag and drop the "Blackberry 3G" scripts into the modem scripts folder.

    *close both folders

*on your BB go to Options>advanced options>TCP make sure that under APN it says wap.voicestream.com (Username and password both blank)

*Ensure that the Mac is paired with the BB

*Open system preferences and click on "Network"

*on the drop down menue for "SHOW" it should say "NETWORK STATUS"

*click on bluetooth (or if not avail click on internal modem) and then configure

*In these fields here is what i entered..
service provider is optional but i entered T-Mobile
account name he said at first to leave blank but it wouldn't accept nothing so had to enterGPRS
password also told to leave blank at first but had to enter GPRS
telephone number - wap.voicestream.com (if this does not work then try *99#)

*Under PPP Options UNCHECK "send PPP echo packets"

    *CHECK "Use TCP header compression"

    *Click "OK"

    *Under "TCP/IP" Tab
configure IPv4 should be set at "Using PPP"

*Under Proxies tab CHECK "use passive FTP mode (PASV)" (Nothing else should be selected)

*Under modem tab select "BlackBerry 3G CID1" (this one works best for me but one of the other Blackberry 3G scripts may work better for you)

*UNCHECK "enable error correction and compression in modem"

*UNCHECK "wait for dial tone before dialing"

    *click "APPLY NOW"

*Return to PPP screen and click on "DIAL NOW"

Hopefully this will work as good for you as it has for me. I have read about people getting kicked off frequently and I have left it connected just to see how long it would last. The highest time is 4+ hours (both hooked up to power sources). Also, the TMO rep assured me that as long as you have the unlimited internet plan there are no extra fees incurred. If you have any questions feel free to ask me!

Re: How to: Blackberry as a bluetooth modem with a Mac

When I try to download the modem script, the txt appears. I delete it but it is still showing as a text file (the icon shows it) and when I look for the script in the modem script library, it still shows as a txt file. Any suggestions on how to convert to just a general icon?

    Tango52...
To get rid of the .TXT extension:
You need to hold ctrl and click the file. Choose "Get info" from the menu that appears. Towards the bottom of the "Get info" window is a tab labeled "Name & Extension". You will need to delete the .TXT extension here also. It will ask you to confirm the change when you close the window. Select OK and you are good to go!

Is it just me or does it always disconnect if you are in active for like a minute? Any way to stop that?

Smile Re: How to: Blackberry as a bluetooth modem with a Mac

My macbook pro doesn't have the /Library/Modem Scripts folder. Uhhh....... I created it, however, when I check the properties under "modems" it doesn't list the file Blackberry 8800.

Anyone else actually get this to work on their Macbook Pro?

    Thanks.

8830 users on OS X can use the built in WWAN script. If on Verizon - you can also download Verizon Access Manager (http://vzw.smithmicro.com/) for the Motorola Q.

I can get connected with my powerbook on T-mobile, but the connection is under 1k/sec. Is there any way to fix this? Dialing up on my thinkpad gives me a much faster connection.

Wow! I would have never thought. Does it work well? I was looking into getting a mac, but I wouldn't make the purchase unless I knew that I could tether my 8830 to it. Is there any other instruction?
