    iGo Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard

I went ahead and bought this item for a pretty good price... http://www.igo.com/product.asp?sku=2524884

Its pretty cool, when it works. I am having quite a time keeping it connected to my 8320. Anyone else here have this, or have experience, or tips on how to get it to function properly?

I can get more detailed with the problem, but it probably wont make sense to you unless you've seen the application specific user menus that come with the keyboard. Let me know if more details are necessary.

    Thanks forum!

EDIT: This is not the Shasta Stowaway.

As much as it pains me to say, because I too was looking for something fully reliable, this is NOT the item for you. It is no where even close to fully functional as a BlackBerry accessory. I am waiting on a response from iGo tech support. Short of their response, the keyboard is going back.

Its flimsy, doesnt stay planted on a flat surface. The amount of force needed to depress a key is enough to make the opposing side lift off the table (like a see-saw). It wont stay connected to my Curve for more than 2-3 minutes without user intervention. That means that you have to then use the trackball, navigate to the program, re-activate the external keyboard, wait for it to pair again...but that only gives you another 2-3 minutes of usage.

I suppose that I should wait for a response from tech support before fully trashing this device, but the other things I mentioned that are inherently wrong with it wont be fixed by an email response from them. This should be advertised as a semi-functional toy. The amount of time you may save in using a larger keyboard, you'll actually waste, on a daily basis, just trying to get it to work. WIthin 3 hours of first using it, i was seriously ready to toss it out the window.

I will post more when tech support responds about the connectivity issue. If that's resolved, then, the keyboard makes its way up to nuisance status.

    Re: iGo Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard

Update: I received a response from iGo about my inquiry as to the connection issue. Here is what they said:

    Josuha,
Unfortunately we do not have a driver for that device currently. This is why it will not properly work. We do not claim compatibility at this time.

If you would like to request consideration for a particular product please go to http://info.igo.com/mobility/feedback.asp.
This information helps influence the decision-making process. Feel free to sign up for our newsletter at www.igo.com for monthly updates as well.

    Best Regards,
    iGo Product Support

With this response, I think iGo is in more trouble than just a lousy device driver. Their website claims compatibility with the 8300 series BlackBerry; they even offer the drivers on their site, yet their support staff claim that they neither support nor offer a driver for the 8300 series...

Find their compatibility information and drivers here:

    compatibility: http://www.igo.com/product.asp?sku=2...#MyGearSection
    driver: http://www.mobilityelectronics.com/s...27&ModelID=505

I agree that there exists naming inconsistency of the same product in different places on their website (which could be confusing even to an employee), but from the first link, its easy to see that the iGo Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard is listed as compatible with, and supported for, the 8300 series.

    Re: iGo Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard

This is sort of an edit to the above post, but since there is lots to edit, I just created a new post.

After more contact with iGo about their keyboard, we have determined that some portion of their driver package that works perfectly for 8300 bbs will not work on 8310 or 8320. Perhaps the bluetooth module is different, or something... They would not let me speak directly with anyone other than a tech support specialist (thats just a euphemism for idiot in this case). They did, however, suggest a hardware swap to see if perhaps just the hardware was faulty (but wouldn't this serve to support that the driver pkg should work?). Fortunately, the 3rd party re-saler allowed me to do so, and the new keyboard will be here tomorrow.

iGo does not claim support for 8300 series devices... just the 8300... so, before purchasing this device, be very specific with what device you have. Even though the OS is 4.2 for 8300, and 8310, and 8320, device variation will make all the difference in the world in this keyboard (according to iGo).

A+ for the guy who I bought it from, F- for iGo.

More to follow with the new keyboard...

And oh, if you are running on BES, check with your IT for policy. Otherwise, you might not be able to get this to work.

    chinesecat,

Do you still like the Stowaway keyboard? I was just looking at the Blackberry keyboard for me (http://www.blackberrysource.com/stor....asp?item=188#) and then came to the stacks looking for people who might have used it - found your post from December. Any updates? Is it still working well for you?
    Thanks,

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but has anyone had any luck with the Stowaway Ultra-Slim BT Keyboard and 8330/4.5+? I have been all over w/no luck. I know when these things first came out, they were like $139. But I just got a brand new one @ a unique store called "Tuesday Morning"...of course I purchased mine for about $43 w/tax included. ($Deal$) I got it to pair w/my Dell Axim X51V, but no luck w/my 8130/8330. Any tips would be great. -TIA!

No! Now that I have 4.5, I really cant get the keyboard to work... its a total loss now. It sorta worked with 4.2, but there is no hope with 4.5. :-(

That's what I was afraid of. I had been doing research and found that there is no chance of a new driver...unless a private programmer creates a fix. Thx anyway.

well, i've learned the hard way too..so don't feel bad. You are not alone. i bought one too from ebay and did not do a full research. the seller guaranteed that it works. long story short. I bought it and tried many different ways to connect it until finally, the manufacturer emailed me and said it is compatible to my bb 8130. now, i have this that is no use to me. oh wel, you got to learn somehow, mine....the hard way! cheers:cry:??
