Thumbs up Great Deal on 4GB Sandisk microSD's!

I came across this deal over Christmas and have since ordered, received, and used the product. Amazon.com has listed Sandisk 4GB microSD cards for $35-40 with included microSD->SD adapters. I purchased mine through a company called Digital Media Source and got a free SD->USB adapter (some promotion that they have going on).

Flash memory prices seem to be continually going down, but this is the best deal I've come across. I thought I'd share my find for those of you that don't want to spend $120+ for the 8GBs (or can't use them yet).

Mods, I apologize if this is in the wrong section. Please move if needed.

    Depending on the OS

Most can handle the 4 GB without a problem. Ones with 4.3 or later can support the 8GB

    Or so I'm told

I have an 8100 and have 2.8 MB left on my 2 gb card. My OS is 4.2.1.109. What's the largest size card I can get for it? My iPOD (8gb Nano Video) decided to take a crap on me LOL

Re: Great Deal on 4GB Sandisk microSD's!

Newegg has some 4GB Class 6 SDHC cards w/ adapter for 25 bucks... paid cheapest shipping, got it in two days.
    Works great on 8130 w/ 4.3.

    FYI:
    Max for 4.2 is 2GB in spec @ FAT16/32kB cluster -or- 4GB out of spec @ FAT16/64kB cluster (SD1.0/1.1)
    Max for 4.3 is 8GB (SD2.0/SDHC)

This might be much... but bottom line, if you are still on 4.2, I wouldn't go beyond a 2GB card as you have a very high chance of getting a card that won't work (SDHC cards aren't supported yet and non-SDHC 4GB cards tinker with the SD 1.0/1.1 spec with varied success). Yes, you might find a 4GB that works but you're def taking a chance. If you can wait till 4.3/4.5, then you'll get SDHC support and you can buy 4GB & 8GB cards inside the SD2.0 spec.
    ... or so I've heard.

    SDHC

An extension of the SD standard, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity, SD 2.0), allows capacities in excess of 2 GB. SDHC cards are often formatted with the FAT32 file system, which supports partition sizes greater than 2 GB.It uses the same form factor as SD, but the SD 2.0 standard in SDHC uses a different memory addressing method (sector addressing vs byte addressing), thus theoretically reaching a maximum capacity of up to 2048GB. SDHC cards only work in SDHC compatible devices, but standard SD cards work in both SD and SDHC devices. The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.

SDHC cards have SD Speed Class Ratings defined by the SD Association. The SD Speed Class Ratings specify the following minimum sustained write speed on to empty SDHC cards:
    • Class 2: 2 MB/s
    • Class 4: 4 MB/s
    • Class 6: 6 MB/s
As of early 2008, SDHC cards are available in capacities up to 16GB.

    SD and SDHC compatibility issues

As of early 2007, the simultaneous availability of non-standard 4 GB SD and of standards-compliant 4 GB SDHC cards, and incompatibilities between SD and SDHC have caused confusion among consumers buying memory devices.

SD and SDHC cards and devices have these compatibility issues :
    • Devices that do not specifically support SDHC do not recognize SDHC memory cards.
    • Some manufacturers have produced 4 GB SD cards that conform to neither the SD2.0/SDHC spec nor existing SD devices.

You can use 4GBs max with the 8100 with the latest 4.2.1 OS. I have a 4Gb in mine right now with the same OS as you and it works fine. I even have 2.9GBs free that I have no clue what I'm gonna do with....lol.

When OS 4.3/4.5 (whatever they call it now) comes out the max will be 8GBs.
