Question Strange "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" Behavior

I'm hoping someone can help my figure out what's going on with my handheld (8310) and desktop synchronization. I'm on my 3rd blackberry (7290, 8700c prior - all in the Cingular AT&T family), and this is the first time I've experienced the below problem.

The "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" seems to be broken (synchronization works fine when it comes to marking items read or filing them into various folders).

    1. If I delete an unread item on the handheld and sync, the email in the inbox is marked as "read" (but is not removed from my computer's inbox).

    2. If I delete a read item on the handheld and sync, the email in the inbox is marked as "read" ( but is not removed from my computer's inbox).

    3. If I read an email on the handheld (or mark it "read") and sync, the email is marked "read" on my computer's inbox. If I then delete that read email on my handheld and sync again, it will be deleted from my computer's inbox.

Item 3 above is the only way I can get "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" to function 'properly'. It's fine if I'm sitting at my desk, but rather dysfunctional if I'm on the road (and come back to an inbox full of email messages that I tried to delete).

My company does not support wireless sync.
"Synchronize moves and deletes" is set to "Mailbox wins" in the desktop manager
    Desktop Manager is 4.2
Handheld is set to "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld"
I've tried deleting and undeleting the CMIME service book, rebooting, and just about everything else I've read online.

Does anyone have any further ideas to help me solve this problem? It would seem like it could be done because synchronization will remove emails deleted on the handheld from my computer's inbox, but only when they've been previously synch'ed as "read".

    Many thanks!

Re: Strange "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" Behavior

i would check your email clients settings as i believe that the "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" option is only intended for when say: you delete a message from the device on a gmail account, then if i logged into google from my pc that email would be gone. if i now log into thunderbird and tell it to get messages that one message wouldn't be there. your desktop and the blackberry are essentially the same thing: a reader

when you setup up the sync in the desktop manager did you goto the advanced tap for each sync item and tell it to make the blackberry win? its under conflict resolution

Re: Strange "Delete On: Mailbox & Handheld" Behavior

    Thanks for the reply.

I currently have it set to "desktop wins". For example, if I'm in the office and go to lunch, read an email on the bb, then come back to my desktop, read that same email and file it, when I sync it'll show back up in the computer's inbox (since the same email has been modified by both the handheld and the computer, conflict reolution takes over).

I'm simply trying to get the desktop software to delete from the computer emails i've deleted from the handheld (and since the email hasn't been modified in both places, the conflict shouldn't come into play). Do I understand the process correctly?

    Thanks!

Are you on a corporate BES or personal BIS?
(I noticed you said your company does not support wireless synch)

    Try this as well.

Open desktop manager > double click synchronize

Make sure Reconcile messages, synchronize organzier data, and update device's date and time are selected. Leave execute add-in actions un selected.

You can check auto synch also.

It sounds like you already have your optimal settings in the configure synchronization box under configuration tab in synchronize window.
(synch moves and deletes, and mailbox wins)

j llama - I'm on a corporate BES (and I was with the first two devices, as well).

The settings as you recommend above are checked (except for update devices date and time - is that one critical?).

I just landed in FL and filed heaps of messages, synched, and now find that the filing sync isn't working, either. It just marked all the messages "read". This whole thing is very odd...

Any other ideas besides changing the "mailbox wins" and "handheld wins" before every sync?

    Uh oh...

How important is it that the current handheld software also be installed in the desktop manager? I just noticed that IT still has the 7290 and 8700c in there, but nothing from the 8310.

Could this oversight be the root cause of my issues?

Solution: Delete the "Research In Motion" folder inside the \Application Data folder to reset corrupt sync files. Upon a new sync, folder will be recreated.
