    New, just begun, totally lost

    Hi,
Long story short: I lost my old cellphone (dinosaur that it was), helped someone out, got their used BB for free. It's a 7230, they said it was unlocked (no idea what that means, but the phone says it came from Tmobile) and wiped. It had no user guide. No disc to install programs. It has no ESN# that I can tell. I was told it has a SIM, but what kind I don't know, either.

Now that I've been totally unhelpful, I need to know:
1.) where to go to find the proper programs to install
2.) how to find out the ESN and SIM

Ultimately, this device would be used for casual use; internet access, "call me if there's an emergency," maybe forwarding office calls, etc.

    Any suggestions? Pointers? Tips? Please...?

    Edited for silly spelling errors

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~well as far as software to use, you will be able to find most of it here on this site, go to the downloads and look for the desktop manager software should be 4.1 or 4.2, these should work for your device, as far as the phone being unlocked, this will allow you to use cingular or tmobile, there might be others but I am not sure. You can go to the provider you wish and they should be able to help you activate the device and get your bb data plan which is required for emails, web browsing and the full fuctionality of the device, hope this helps a bit

Hello Juline and Welcome to the Stacks.

For a start, here is a link where you can download the user manual for your 7203: http://www.blackberry.com/knowledgec...owse&sort=name

Many thanks so far for these replies! I felt kind of silly, but after running in circles for a few hours, not quite sure where to start... well, I'm just glad I found such a friendly place to plop my amateur self.

    Juline1, Welcome to PinStack.

One question, what carrier are you with. It may make a difference whether you will be able to use the 7230 with that carrier. 7230s don't have ESNs they have IMEI which can be found by going to Options/About.

Let us know if there is anything else we can do to help with this problem or your BB.

    Hi,
IMEI? Well, that explains something. No carrier as of yet. I'm just shopping around, looking at options.
I admit I'm curious about voip, and Skype in particular. It seems a bit too good to be true.

I've found that this BB is lacking a SIM card.
This is a most educational experience; I'm learning about a wholly different method of communication than with the old dinosaur cell. Good thing I like to learn!

The 7230 is a GSM based BlackBerry, which means you need to make sure that your carrier has GMS based service, and you will want to make sure that they support blackberry devices. You will receive a SIM when you set your Cell Phone Account up.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks again for the replies.
I was told there was a SIM card present, and I thought maybe I could just go to the same company and get a new one. Ah, well.

The carrier you chose for your Cellular service will provide a SIM when you activate your account.

    Hope this helps

Another question (thank you for your patience with me!): what are the advantages/disadvantes towards installing voip into your BB?
Too, it seems some companies -take Sunrocket or Vonage, for example- act as service plans in and of themselves. Others, like Skype, require you already have a service plan to work off of. Am I reading this right?

Well, since you need a Blackberry data plan to use any VOIP from it as VOIP uses the internet for transmission, I really don't see any advantage unless you are doing a lot of international calling.

    Okay, I'm back...thanks again for everyone's patience!

I went with T-mobile's internet package, the one where you get unlimited net access for $29.99 a month. I want to download Skype into my BB, and use that as my main phone contact. Hope it works out...
