Question Desktop Manager on microSD card (Pearl)

    Hi

Does anyone know if its possible to install Desktop manager onto a microSD card on Pearl 8100 ? Does Desktop manager need changes to the registry ?

This is to go with a portable start menu installed on the microSD card such as that supported on http://portableapps.com (for example).

The idea would be that you plug your pearl into a Windows pc, run the portable start menu, with a full batch of applications running from the microSD card. So you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.

    Thanks

Very novel idea. Unfortunately, not possible. Boy that would be awesome though. It sounds like something they could progress to down the road though.

In what respect not possible ?

The micorSD card can be set to act as a usb flash drive so that when you connect the BB to an XP pc its auto recognized as another disk.
Subject to the host pc's permissions you can run programs from the flash drive on the host pc.
I run a virtually complete pc on a stick from memory stick that way (Firefox, OpenOffice, FileZilla etc etc) all my settings, documents and bookmarks travel with me, independent of the settings, software and preferences of the pc I'm using.

So do you mean that you can't run any programs on the host pc from the microSD card or that Desktop Manager can't be installed on a removable device ?

    Thanks

I'm not sure about your personal settings. I've tried running an app from the microSD card to no avail. I've not tried installing DM to the card as I don't really have the need. But I'd be surprised if it worked. If you try, let us know your results!
    Thanks!

The DM Install does change the registry, so I don't know how possible it will be to do what you want.

    Hope this Helps

    Question

Can DM Install be run as a normal user (not administrator) ?

If so it should be possible to fix it so that DM can be run from a usb flash drive. Some tweeks might be needed to deal with drive letters changing on different host PCs.

It's slightly less elegant and I would need a to carry a flash drive + a micro usb hub ontop of the BB + its cable but in theory I should be able to get full functionality with my original idea.

I run DM from a Non-admin account on my laptop all the time. I only go to the Admin account to execute the OS Install files. But running the BB on a USB Hub causes problems sometimes.

    PeterGB,

I do the same thing (running complete pc from memory card / stick). Actually it was a usb flash drive.
I now do that from my 8100. For anyone interested there is a great program called Portable Apps: http://portableapps.com/ that has a web browser, email client' PDF reader, Office suite and a bunch of other stuff. If you spend any time working on other computers it is worth a look. Now if I could just find a way to get Ulimate Boot CD4Windows to port out to a flash card I'd be in heaven

Re: Desktop Manager on microSD card (Pearl)

I do this now with my 8100 and have started to leave my Thumb drive at home. I carry a retractable USB cable now in my car for hooking the 8100 to any PC with USB slot.
There are a couple of settings on the phone that need to be enabled for this to work properly.

If you want to use the media card as a portable storage or portable application space then goto:

    Options...Advanced Options...Media Card:
Change : Mass Storage Mode support = ON
Auto enable Mass Storage Mode when Connected = YES

This does two things, it allows auto recognition of the 8100 as a mass storage unit without drivers needing to be installed on the host computer, and allows it to show up as a drive letter on the host computer.

The second thing I did is create an Autorun.inf file that resides on the root of the media card so that when I plug it into the USB port, my application loader menu is the first option in the "What to do list" after auto recognition of the device.

I use many of the portable apps suite, but I don't use their menu, I prefer the Pstart menu which is VERY customizable for my needs.

I don't see many advantages of running the Desktop software from the 8100 card except for loading applications to the phone or tethering. In the case of the latter I am working on ripping the drivers and files needed for base line tethering running it from the media card so that when the host PC doesn't have internet access, I can access it through the 8100 while connected to the USB port...this is a work in progress.

If you are on a host PC that isn't your own, there is nothing to SYNC, backups and restores are not needed and the majority of features of the desktop management software become unneccesary, save for the two mentioned above...and personally if I'm on the road loading an app can wait till I'm on MY pc. Tethering IS a high priority for me though, without needing the Desktop software, so still looking for that.

What were the main reasons for some of you for wanting to run the Desktop software from the phone itself?

You also need the device driver to be installed.

Actually most systems running Windows 2k, XP, 2003, or XP don't need a device driver specific to the BB to support Mass Storage Mode. The native OS drivers will suffice to read and write to the card in the phone. I have to jack into a system and need a driver for it to be recognized. Although the driver is nice for charging. Having the driver on the card is a plus but that is just a couple files.

I too want to be able to use my pearl as a tethered modem with a host computer without loading Desktop manager. Have you come up with a solution?

Re: Desktop Manager on microSD card (Pearl)

You need device manager or desktop manager running in order to use your 8100 as a tethered modem. Is there a speicific reason you do not wish to install Desktop Mgr? Here is a solution (still requires you to Download the DM package) If you wish to use a smalller file then choose 4.2 sp1 (withour Roxio Media Manger)

To install the Universal Serial Bus (USB) drivers without installing the BlackBerry Desktop Software, install only the BlackBerry Device Manager . When you install the BlackBerry Device Manager, you can charge the device and transfer data through the USB connection.

    1. Start the installation of the BlackBerry Desktop Software.
    2. In the Install Shield Wizard, when you are prompted to choose Typical or Custom installation, choose Custom and click Next.
    3. On the Custom Setup screen, click the arrow next to the BlackBerry Desktop Manager option and select This feature will not be available.
    4. Click Next and complete the installation.

It is a laptop and that there isn't a lot of memory space on it and want to save the amount of space for other projects.

    Thanks!
