Transmedia launches Glide Mobile OS 2.0

Glide is the complete mobile desktop solution featuring more than 20 advanced productivity and collaboration applications with both offline and online access. Glide runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris, Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile -- and supports over 75 mobile devices. Glide is available in 18 languages including English, Albanian, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Turkish.

"Wouldn't it be great if you could have one compatible file and information management system and one compatible set of applications for all of your devices and what if you could extend that compatibility to everyone you communicate, share and work with?" contemplated TransMedia Chairman & CEO, Donald Leka with the audience at the D Conference. Mr. Leka continued by explaining "that was the goal when we set out to build Glide -- to develop a technology that could cut -- or Glide -- through proprietary OS, hardware, software, file format and network barriers -- like butter."

    First Impressions

It's available now for free. You get 5GB of storage space too. I signed up and will post a review in a few days after using it a bit.

    First impressions:

Works great on a Desktop, Laptop (any OS). UI is very smooth and clean. Email program is very tight. Same with the document creation programs.

Looks good and snappy in the Blackberry browser. One thing I can say right off the bat is that they need to label the icons so you don't have to memorize what they are. More to follow....................

Have tried this out for the past couple of days, after signing up for the free account. All comments above about icons on the BB display apply! Have been able to upload some individual word files, but have not been able to view them on the BB. Ditto uploading folders , doesn't seem to happen at all, and have not been able to confirm adding anyone wiht permission to view my files. It looked great on the demo, but there seems to be very little help for new users.

    I'm not impressed.

I found that its performance is vastly different browser to browser.

On my desktop I have the latest version of firefox, and it ran painfully slow, it took more than ten minutes to load my few hundred bookmarks.

There's also no 'how to' that i found.

When I tried to use it on my Curve (Tmo 4.2.2.180) with the browser set to emulate Netscape the website took over a minute to load, and took 45 seconds for a keystroke to appear in the login box.

I tried my 8120 (Tmo 4.3.0.115) using Opera (which it doesn't support synching with on a desktop) it zipped along.

Going back to the Curve when i switche the browser to IE emulation it moved at a reasonable pace but all the Icons and Text were grouped in threes.

    Why i dislike it:

No way to upload contacts from a file.
Does not perform equally with different browsers.
    Clunky.
    No how to guide.
Did not let me edit files (rtf, doc) in native formats.
You can't import info from a webmail account.

I'm sue i'll run into a few more things along the way as i test it more. Pin me if you find more info.
