Smartphone battleground: Apple and Google head to China
From ZDnet: The Apple vs. Google smartphone race is coming to China - and from early reports, it looks like Apple is eyeing the rougher road to the top.
According to a report in the Financial Times, Apple couldn’t come to a revenue-sharing agreement with the big dog mobile carrier in that country - China Mobile - and instead is talking to No. 2 China Unicom about a three-year exclusive deal for the iPhone. But don’t think China Mobile execs are crying over the loss. They placing their bets on devices built on Google’s Android mobile OS.
Wow. Very different approach to see the carrier being the one who slides the papers across the desk back to Apple and says unacceptable. Carriers here are still dying to get the device. Is it because our devices are so far behind theirs, or is it because, as the article says, China Mobile knows it can compete easily with Android?
I didn't register to read the full article but I recall Verizon doing a similar thing to Apple and of course that is how AT$T ended up with the contract. China brings additional hurdles and it's much different but I'm sure Apple feels their product will speak for itself.
Shouldn't have to register to read the article unless I already am and just don't remember doing it. Quite possible I guess. The tone of the article really suggests that China Mobile is in the driver's seat and is telling Apple that they have the home team advantage.
I finally got to the full read. If it's a done deal it should be a good market to watch. I think (i think?) I read where China Mobile numbers were much larger than Unicom. If that's true it will make it even more interesting to watch. (Numbers Source) (Source Numbers)
It looks like it could be an uphill Trek.
