| Shortening Handset Exclusivity Deals Been a lot in the news lately about the big carriers and their exclusivity deals for certain handsets and company practices that may have limited smaller carriers from gaining a foothold in certain markets. Today, Verizon announced a company policy to allow smaller carriers access to some of it's handsets which they have exclusive deals for. nytlogo152x23.gif "Verizon Wireless said Friday that it would let small wireless companies have access to some of the cellphones that it offers exclusively to its customers under contracts with phone makers. The move is an attempt to head off federal regulation of such exclusive handset deals." Full article here. Last edited by MStrawder; 07-24-2009 at 07:25 PM. |

Thanks BM. In all honesty this is going to be a big boost to smaller, regional carriers, as it may allow them to grab and retain more customers by offering devices only the big boys have been able to lock in. I read an article some time ago where they discussed the differences in European vs American markets and it was interesting that we tend to pay less for our handsets because we commit to the carriers with contracts, but they tend to pay more for the device because it's portable to nearly any carrier and don't sign long contract. Gonna look around and see if I can still find that one.

There you have it folks. If a tiny regional carrier is currently your home you should be getting your hands on new devices a bit more promptly now. If you’re on Sprint and are hoping for a hot new Verizon exclusive however, you’ll likely still have a while to wait.
