RIM working on BlackBerry with touchscreen

Research In Motion Ltd. is developing its next-generation BlackBerry to have touchscreen capabilities, pitting the popular messaging device directly against Apple Corp.'s popular iPhone.

According to a research note written by GMP Securities analyst Ray Sharma, a recent patent filed by RIM engineers strongly indicates that RIM will release a touchscreen BlackBerry in the near future.

"The oft rumored RIM touchscreen device has lofty prospects," wrote Mr. Sharma.

In a patent filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office last June, the new BlackBerry device will have a keyboard that retracts into the device in order to create more room on the screen, Mr. Sharma says. It will also have what is called tactile response mechanism akin to Nintendo's Wii controller that vibrates based on input from the user.

What I envision is simply an improved keyboard design and the trackball replaced by touch screen navigation. (select, drag, scroll, etc)

Picture your 8300 or 8800 with touch screen and minus the trackball. Still has the keypad but the navigation is touch screen which replaces the trackball thus making it easier to increase screen & keyboard size while making BB's even thinner.

I may be wrong but I don't see RIM getting rid of the psychical keyboard... yet. Imaging your Blackberry with a larger screen larger keys but no trackball... while being the same overall size or smaller.

The current trakball takes up quite a bit of mid space forcing a wide distance between the bottom of the display screen and the keyboard. A touch screen for navigation would eliminate this.

Only time will tell... but count on it being unique and innovative.

You mean something similar to that of the 2nd generation zune's touchpad? That would be a nice replacement for the trackball.

Boygenius had the rim patent pics up some time ago. The diagram had an 8700 body with the screen extending to where the keypad is. Then at the bottom the keypad unrolled like a garage door sliding over the screen. So, u don't have to have the keypad over all the time.

Interesting, I hope the kaypad feel won't be too bad.

I hope we don't have to use a stylus. I gave up on those onscreen hunt and peck keyboards. I decided I wasn't going to be a chicken pecking away at anything.

And it better have 3g and a real browser.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~I'm all for losing the trackball. Seems like I am always having to clean it. I'm excited.
