RIM wants clearer pricing for mobile data

BlackBerry maker warns that mobile users struggle to grasp the cost of downloading data.

Senior representatives at Research In Motion (RIM) and Sony Ericsson suggested on Wednesday that operators need to make data pricing simpler for users and IT managers to understand.

Speaking at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, RIM's vice president, Charmaine Eggberry, told ZDNet UK that users generally found it hard to predict how much it costs to download data.

"The key focus area for carriers is to make it simpler to understand, because [users] come from a text-message mentality," Eggberry said on Wednesday — referring to fixed-price short messages and their easily understandable bundled packages. -- Read more

Tmobile has the perfect pricing plan, unlimited data for $20. The others will catch up or die, in my opinion.

According to T-Mobile's web site, that's not the correct plan for the Blackberry. T-Mobile lists Blackberry-specific data plans at:

    http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/D...ackBerry%c2%ae

According to their site, T-Zone's isn't for Blackberry.

I have unlimited data. I never said anything about T-Zones. I use my BB data all day and use it as a teathered modem all night. lol. Probably over a gig this week. Although T-zones seems to be included cause it works, too.

I love tmobile, they are the best phone company *ever*. I had verizon for many years, they just try to overcharge for everything, and then still screw you every chance they get. Tmobile gives me what I want at a price I can afford. You cant beat them.

I have the National Business Plan 300. I get 300 anytime, 300 mobile to mobile, 100 text msgs, free weekends and *unlimited* data for $49. Beat that. And it's edge data, too. 3x faster than GPRS.

I didn't argue that you don't get it. I said that's not meant to cover Blackberry. And I did so because of the original post.

I find it funny that RIM says that mobile data plans need to be clearer. Are they not the ones who force you to get a special BlackBerry data plan to begin with? Would it not clear things up if they make their product work with any kind of data plan?

f_fisher, that is incorrect RIM has ntn to do with data pricing. The carriers set the prices and pay for the use of their system.

Otherwise why would one company have unlimited for $20 and the other have 1mb for $25 bucks

It looks like the Link is for Voice and Blackberry Data Service bundled plan. If you just have a regular 39.99 voice plan...you can add unlimited Data for 20$.

According to today's T-Mobile page on plans for BB. They charge the _same as Cingular_. Unlimited BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) $29.99 per month.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~The $20 plan from TMO is most certainly for BBs, for chrisake, its called "Unlimited BLACKBERRY Add-On". They do have other plans for the BB, like the one for BES and the Minutes and Mail plan. I have a BB on TMO and as others here said, I pay 20 bucks for unlimited web browsing, push e-mail and PIN messaging.
