RIM to unveil new BlackBerry software
RIM is rolling out new software this year that will connect on-the-go workers to all their office programs, even those not specifically written for the BlackBerry device.
Re: RIM to unveil new BlackBerry software
The move is an effort by RIM to distinguish itself in the increasingly competitive wireless e-mail market by developing the underlying technology for delivering the next rush of mobile data.
Customers using BlackBerrys for mobile e-mail today are tapping just a fraction of the device's power, Jim Balsillie, chairman and co-chief executive officer, said on a webcast of the company's annual analyst day. Most BlackBerry habits today are analogous to buying a car, using only first gear and walking the rest of the journey, he said. "I'm explaining to you that you've got to try this thing called second, third and fourth gear."
The new product, called BlackBerry Enterprise Server for MDS Applications, is in the testing phase and will sit behind a firewall, just like the BlackBerry Enterprise Server companies use to send and receive e-mails to a BlackBerry handset. The company told analysts the new technology is part of a plan to double today's subscriber base to 10 million. To reach that goal, RIM also says it will start putting new features on some of its BlackBerrys to appeal to a broader set of customers.
To fight competition, the Waterloo, Ont., company will add cameras and other multimedia features to some of its devices and push deeper into international markets, including South Korea and Japan, RIM executives said, without providing specific time lines.
