RIM to sell unlocked BlackBerry devices in Asia
Research in Motion (RIM), maker of BlackBerry smart phones and solutions, is planning to enter into partnership with Indian retail chains to expand distribution and reach in the market.
In essence, this will mean Indian consumers may soon be able to purchase a BlackBerry handset and choose their mobile operator as against the current model where only Sim-locked handsets are sold by the operators.
Incidentally, RIM globally has such a tieup with retail chains in certain markets such as with Carrefour in Europe. “We are planning to grow the distribution reach in India for a bigger retail presence. Tying up with multi-vendor telecom retail chains is an option which we are actively evaluating. We are even open to the idea of selling unlocked handsets in India,” said RIM vice-president (Asia-Pacific) Norm W K Lo.
