Re: Rim to launch free Blackberry Unite-Server

And who is the target market here? end users? prosumers? enterprise?
What benefit does it bring over BIS or BES? The fact that it "manages" photos and video is interesting... does this mean it "manages" them OTA?

Re: Rim to launch free Blackberry Unite-Server

What I'm not sure about is whether Unite-server is a new piece of software, or the same BlackBerry Unite! that we've been hearing about, only lost in translation.

As for target market, dtx, I think they're actually looking at families and small businesses.

This is good news for an OS 4.5 release also! Unite needs 4.3. This in conjunction with the bluetooth stereo gateway upcoming (which also will need 4.5 since it includes the stereo bluetooth profile for older Pearl's) we should 4.5 soon!!!

Re: Rim to launch free Blackberry Unite-Server

why leave your computer running all dy if you don't need to? turn it on when you need something synced, the bis will still work. Blackberry unite is going to be an awesome piece of software. who couldn't use it? even if you only have one user it gives a free ability to sync wirelessly(if you don't mind leaving your pc on), or you can push stuff to workers or family/friends or whoever you have unite associated with. I personally can't wait as it is a selling point so i can sell the blackberry more and for personal use.

bb unite!

We’ve been telling you about BlackBerry Unite! for a while now and it looks like the wait continues for stateside BlackBerry users. First launched back in October with Spanish Carrier Telefonica, Unite! essentially turns your home PC into a BlackBerry server. Rather than rely on a RIM server, Unite! allows users to install free software on a home PC and bypass RIM servers all together. Unite! also allows users to manage and share photos and other media files across devices. The bad news? Thus far at Mobile World Congress RIM has mentioned Germany and a few other countries that will gain access to Unite! this year, but no mention has been made of the US. Further RIM-related news from Mobile World Congress comes from Alcatel-Lucent, which has announced a new prepaid solution for BlackBerry. Their solution, currently in the early stages of development, would fully integrate with existing carrier network equipment and facilitate a complete range of prepaid services. Most notably, the solution will support prepaid email and track volume in real time to appropriately and instantly deplete the user’s balance. Once released, Alcatel-Lucent’s prepaid solution will open a wide range of potential new business that had previously been inaccessible to RIM.

Re: bb unite!

Sounds like a major security risk. What is being done to secure the user's computer and bb?
