| RIM Network down.. 4/17/07 as of 8pm EST
BlackBerry users in the Western Hemisphere could be affected by a massive system failure at RIM which is stopping the handheld device receiving e-mails. RIM, said its infrastructure failed around 8 pm New York time Tuesday and has been down ever since. The technical problem means that the e-mails are not being pushed to the portable communication units. "Please be advised that we are currently experiencing a service interruption that is causing delays in sending and receiving messages," said a recording on a customer service number in Vancouver, Canada. "The company will provide updates as soon as they become available." Officials at the Waterloo, Ontario-based company could not be reached for comment. The disruption may be limited to North America, with some problems in other parts of the world for customers who receive their e-mails through North American servers. Mobile-phone companies in Asia and Europe said they haven't experienced problems. Research In Motion had about 8 million subscribers at the end of the fiscal fourth quarter ended in February. This is the MAIN reason why BB-Outage list was setup at Bb-Outage Info Page It's too bad that we can't get people at RIM to post to it when something happens. |

Hello everyone, here is some info i just recieved from our engineers here at cingular. ETTR: (Estimated time of resolution) 04-17-2007 23:11 Pacific - Issue:RIM is reporting network issues. - Current Status:RIM continue to report slow steady improvement. RIM reporting traffic has increased over AT&T links. RIM will continue to monitor logs. RIM rolled back to to a known working software revision which was upgraded last weekend. 60% of RIM BES connections have reconnected. - Customer Impact:Customers sending or recieving RIM BIS or BES emails may be latent. So as of right now it seems that this issue should be resolved by the end of the day, Pacific time. If there are any more updates i will let you folks know. Some of my users report that they can send and receive here in Princeton, NJ. Looks like the network is coming back up slowly and surely.

Does anyone know exactly what happened? The link I saw earlier said it was an outage but that is extremely vague.

Time for hardware upgrades RIM. VTech is a small sample of how busy phone circuits can cause users to migrate to email and BB PIN messaging. It may be unrelated since CNN Live just gave an update on the VTech shooting via "just-in" BlackBerry email. However, it's my understanding that BIS services, hosted BES and PIN messaging no matter carrier ALL go through RIM's servers. Thus any event that increases system traffic significantly can have a hugh impact. With the current setup any single point of failure at RIM can be responsible for several carriers. |
