    RIM Discusses Video Conferencing

In an article on TinyComb, Jason Wilk described an interview with a top RIM executive during the Fortune Brainstorm event in Pasadena. He says the 10 minute interview offered some great insight into RIM's personal stance on growth, development, app world, and even new features.

The executive, whom Jason has agreed to keep anonymous, said that App World hasn't taken off quite like they would have wanted and, “It’s tough when you are going up against a company operating one platform and perfecting a single piece of hardware”. The executive even went on to give slight praise to the iPhone, saying it's a great phone, but still asserts that Blackberry devices will continue to have strong growth and that, “They’re different phones”. The last part of the article mentions front-facing cameras and their potential for video conferencing capabilities. The executive was quoted as saying, “video conferencing is something that could completely change the mobile landscape and it is something we have been thinking about and working on for quite some time. You will start seeing something early next year”.

    Good stuff RIM.

Early on I thought we might see this in June but keep forgetting about the bandwidth requirements. Does anyone think there will be additional costs associated with the phones that have this feature? I was set on seeing iChat App this year and it just never happened. 4G and LTE should open new doors for us in 2010.

It definitely could. If you read through that article, you'll notice the executive take a swing at AT&T's data network, saying it's the reason the iPhone hasn't seen an app or capable model yet.

I'm sure with the right codecs, it could work on EDGE, but the quality would be poor. 3G/4G will be the way to go for good quality video/audio.

This brings us to why so many people are disappointed (some upset) with AT$T. Their Network has limited or held back what some feel can already be done but without the Network behind it there in no reason to even offer it. (video conferencing, video calls).

I dont think it will work on 3G... i think it will require LTE in order to work.. Finally we are getting phones and services that other countries have been enjoying for years..

Aren't video calls a reality in many countries for a while that have 3G outside North America?

Not sure, but the big thing here was more that RIM was looking into a change in the way devices were made to accommodate the technology. Specifically making the cameras on the devices on the front.
