You have to disassemble the device to that degree to get the trackball out? Unbelievable.

I agree that it is quite ridiculous to have to disassemble to the board to get to the trackball. Ill stick to my Curve's crappy plastic ring and my fingernail. Heaven help you if you get a piece of lint in there and can't blow it out...at least they made the ball black to start with this time. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

The new black trackball is supposed to be much more resistant to dust and dirt. Still, a complete pain in the rear.

Just feel sorry for the Bold users. They have the same lint prone trackball of the Curve and have to disassemble their device just like this to get it out...

Not good thinking on RIM's part.
    As always, just my opinion...

So far... Whenever the ball on my Bold doesn't operate properly I just roll it rapidly against some plain paper (phone face down) in all directions with about half the pressure required to make it click. So far it's restored perfect operation every time. Seems to take any grease/oil off it.

Just hope my trackball stays cleaner longer, if I ever get one...

I'm sitting here shaking my head in amazement.

I just finished the 3 minute operation of replacing the trackball in my 8310.

Then I come across these pictures of what's required to do the same operation on the new 8900 and I'm well....

    Question

Isn't the point of this trackball to not get dirty? I thought the atomic design was to keep the dirt out and it is black to not show the staining of the plastic

Oh man! With great power, comes great responsibilities. Which can only mean one thing. Make you sure carry a pocket-sized hand sanitizer with you at all times. Lol.
