Plane diverted due to ownerless BB

At mom's and on CNN they had a story during the 911 rememberance about a US plane diverted in TX.
Before takeoff there was an ownerless bag removed from lugage.
Then in the air they found a Blackberry belonging to no one and diverted the plane.
Who would leave their BB on a plane?
Please add a link to the news story if you can. I'm not near a PC at the moment.

Nothing on CNN yet, however, IMHO we will probably hear a couple stories like this today. Miscommunication and fear in people andall of a sudden stories are going to start popping up all over the place.

Like 9/11. The reports of car bombs going off outside the State Department. The supposed 5th hijacked plane that disappeared?

I put as much faith in CNN and the media as I do rolling around on the floor playing with a rabid dog.

Here you go...Typical media blah blah blahness:

    Mystery BlackBerry prompts airliner diversion

    POSTED: 10:43 a.m. EDT, September 11, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal authorities diverted a San Francisco-bound United Airlines jet to Dallas as a precautionary security measure on Monday after finding an unclaimed BlackBerry on board.

Officials had also found and removed an unidentified backpack from the jet before it left Atlanta, said Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Yolanda Clark. She described the jet, United flight 351, as secure and said it was diverted to Dallas "out of an abundance of caution."

"The aircraft is secure," Clark said. She said there was no indication that the hand-held computer was being used as an explosive device or trigger.

The flight was diverted on the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terror attacks. Authorities decided not to send military fighter aircraft to escort the jet, as is routine during an emergency, said Lt. Col. John Cornelio, a spokesman for U.S. Northern Command.

The passengers were to be rescreened by security personnel, according to officials at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which monitors U.S. airspace.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~yeah he is! The bigger issues is what type of measurements are they going to take? Are we now going to have pack our bbs in our luggage?

This seems to be the trend at the moment. But you have to think what if it was an explosive, there'd be a ban on all electrical devices, especially on something like a blackberry that could use an email as a form of detination.

Re: Plane diverted due to ownerless BB

I don't think that the FAA is really too concerned about an BB being turned into an actual explosive itself, however it can act as a detonator (as can any cell phone if someone knows what they are doing).

I believe they are probably more concerned about someone tucking away a bomb in a suitcase in the bottom part of the plane, and then remotely setting it off from a cell phone or equivalent type of device.

This is how the majority of road side bombs in Iraq are being detonated. By cell phones. Too many different ways to explain how they work on here, but almost 80% of the controlled IED explosions over there are being launched by someone with a cell phone in their hand or a cell phone built into the actual IED itself.

They are getting pretty crafty with the way they make the bombs. Could a Blackberry or cell phone be turned into an explosive device itself? Possible but unlikely, especially if they start to get in the habit of making you turn it on when you are going through security. The amount of plastic explosive that would be needed to penetrate the shell of an airplane wouldn't be able to fit into a WORKING device as small as a cell phone. Sure, anything is possible, just not probable.

Now a laptop could easily be turned into an explosive device which I am surprised they have not yet banned from cabins or do more of a thorough check on. It would be easy to concoct a "dummy" cd burner for a laptop and fill it with explosives. If someone was sitting in a window seat area, then my guess is an explosive of that size would be able to penetrate the aircraft and cause a massive problem.

Thanks Ice. Error on the side of caution, yes. But making such a big deal about it on the media? Give me a break. Do you know how many THOUSAND cell phones are left on planes accidently each year? Just because today was 9/11 does it make national media.

Yet again! Our nations media making a mountain out of an anthill! And that lady should lose all Blackberry rights until she can be proven a fit guardian of the Berry.
